Severe J-Mould Separation โ€” This Is How Major Water Damage Starts

J-mould separation is one of the most common and dangerous causes of water ingress in caravans.

These moulds are positioned around the outer corners of the caravan, where there is constant movement, flexing, expansion and contraction. Over time, poor preparation, failed sealant or movement in the body can cause the J-mould to separate.

Once this happens, water can slowly enter behind the mould every time it rains or the caravan is washed.
The biggest problem is that you may not see any signs inside the caravan until the damage has already spread through the wall framing, insulation and internal panels.

This is why regular professional leak inspections are so important.
At Leak Tight RVs, we donโ€™t just seal visible gaps and hope for the best. We pressure test the caravan, identify exactly where the water can enter and explain what needs to be repaired to prevent serious long-term damage.

Donโ€™t wait until you can see water stains or soft walls.
Book your professional caravan leak inspection today.

BUYING A BRAND-NEW CARAVAN? DONโ€™T ASSUME A FACTORY LEAK TEST MEANS ITโ€™S LEAK-FREE.

If youโ€™re purchasing a brand-new caravan and youโ€™re told it has undergone an in-house pressure test, make sure you still arrange an independent inspection with professionals who genuinely understand caravan water ingress.

Owning a pressure testing machine does not automatically mean someone knows how to leak test a caravan properly.
This is a prime example of people not fully understanding how water enters a caravan, where it travels and how quickly a small issue can turn into serious structural damage.

Water ingress may not show visible signs immediately. By the time staining, swelling or internal damage becomes noticeable, the problem may have already been developing behind the walls for months.

At Leak Tight RVs, we have inspected more than 3,500 caravans, including brand-new vans straight from manufacturers and dealerships.

We know exactly what weโ€™re looking for.
We know the common failure points.
We know how water travels.
We know what will become a future problem.
And we know the difference between a proper repair and simply covering a bubble with silicone.

Leak testing is not about buying a machine, finding bubbles and walking away.

We identify the cause.
We repair it correctly.
We educate the owner and manufacturer.
And we help prevent the same issue from happening again.

There is pressure testing, and then there is professional caravan leak detection.
Donโ€™t rely on someone who has simply picked up a machine. Trust the team that has built its entire reputation around understanding caravan water ingress.
Contact Leak Tight RVs to arrange an independent inspection before a small leak becomes a very expensive problem.

WHY DO WE CALL J-MOULDS THE SILENT CARAVAN KILLER?

J-moulds sit on the external corners of your caravan, one of the areas exposed to the most movement, flexing, twisting, expansion and contraction. That is exactly why they are one of the most common places for caravan leaks to develop over time.

One of the biggest problems we find is poor sealant preparation.
If the J-mould and caravan body have not been properly cleaned and prepared with alcohol before the sealant is applied, the silicone may not correctly adhere to either surface.

Once separation begins, water can slowly pass behind the mould every time it rains.
And here is the dangerous partโ€ฆ
You may not see a single drop of water inside your caravan.
The moisture can remain hidden inside the walls, slowly damaging the timber, insulation and structural framing.
By the time visible damage appears internally, the hidden damage inside the wall could already be three to four times worse.

That is why we keep stressing the importance of having your caravan seals regularly checked by a professional who understands where leaks start, and how to stop them before serious damage is done.

Donโ€™t wait until the damage becomes visible. Book your professional caravan leak test today.

External electrical fittings should not bubble during a leak test even before the outside edge of the fitting has been sealed.

If no bubbles appear, this confirms that the cable pe*******on behind the fitting has been properly sealed and is not allowing air out and water into the caravan.

Once this has been checked, the outside of the fitting can then be sealed around the top and sides. We recommend leaving the bottom edge open, with no silicone, so any water that gets behind the fitting can drain away instead of becoming trapped.

Itโ€™s not just about sealing the fitting itโ€™s about sealing it correctly.

Your caravanโ€™s seals need regular maintenance not just when a leak appears.

Every trip, temperature change, rough road and day in the sun puts stress on your caravanโ€™s seals. Over time, sealant can shrink, crack or separate, allowing water to enter without any obvious signs.

By the time you notice stains, soft walls or damp smells, costly damage may already be developing behind the panels.

A professional leak test checks the entire caravan for potential water entry points, including roof joins, windows, doors, hatches, moulds, lights and other external fixtures.

A caravan leak test and seal inspection should be part of your 12-month caravan servicing routine to help:

โ€ข Detect leaks early
โ€ข Prevent hidden water damage
โ€ข Maintain your caravanโ€™s seals
โ€ข Protect the value of your investment
โ€ข Give you confidence before your next trip

Donโ€™t wait until you can see the damage. Prevention is always better than repair.

Contact Leak Tight RVs to book your annual caravan leak test and seal inspection.

If the bubbles are growing, the water is flowing!
