This is one lucky caravan owner.

After having the original J-mould changed over to the newer external L-capping on his three-year-old caravan, he asked us to carry out a leak test to make sure everything had been sealed correctly.

Your annual leak test is about more than just checking silicone.

As you can see here, this access door has lost its adjustment, creating large gaps where water can easily enter the caravan.

A caravan doesn’t have to be leaking today for there to be a problem developing.

That’s exactly why a pre-delivery leak test is so important.
During an independent leak inspection, we’re not only looking for water that is already getting inside. We’re also checking how the caravan has been sealed from day one — including around windows, roof fittings, mouldings, hatches, cable penetrations and external electrical fixtures.

We regularly come across areas that may technically be holding out water at the time of testing, but the sealant coverage, adhesion or finish tells us that it may not stay that way for long.

Things like.
Clearance and marker lights
External power outlets and electrical fittings
Solar cable penetrations
Rear light assemblies
Roof accessories
Windows, hatches and mouldings
A small section of missing sealant or poor adhesion may not leak on the showroom floor. Add heat, cold, UV exposure, road vibration and movement while towing, and that small weakness can become a water entry point later on.

A pre-delivery leak test gives the manufacturer and the new owner the opportunity to identify and rectify these areas before the caravan starts its life on the road.

WHY IN-HOUSE LEAK TESTING ISN’T ENOUGH.

Severe J-Mould Separation — This Is How Major Water Damage Starts

J-mould separation is one of the most common and dangerous causes of water ingress in caravans.

These moulds are positioned around the outer corners of the caravan, where there is constant movement, flexing, expansion and contraction. Over time, poor preparation, failed sealant or movement in the body can cause the J-mould to separate.

Once this happens, water can slowly enter behind the mould every time it rains or the caravan is washed.
The biggest problem is that you may not see any signs inside the caravan until the damage has already spread through the wall framing, insulation and internal panels.
