Hear that?

A Mercedes came in with a noise the owner had been living with for a while. Two pulleys and an idler drive that belt, and the idler was jumping around. On a noise like that you can hear the fault well before you can see it.

That is worth knowing, because a noise is usually the car telling you which part is tired long before the part gives up. Caught early it is an idler. Left alone it takes the belt with it, and then you are not driving anywhere.

If your car is making a sound you do not recognise, record it on your phone and send it to us. Ten seconds of audio tells us more than a paragraph of description.

If you want a useful quote rather than a range, here is what helps.

Make, model and year, so we know which engine and which parts. Then what the car is actually doing: when the noise happens, cold or warm, braking or turning, and how long it has been going on. A photo of the dash with the warning light showing tells us more than a paragraph of description, and a short video of a noise is better again.

If you drive a PureTech engine, you have probably seen the timing belt question come up somewhere.

The part that actually matters is that the answer depends on your exact engine, not on the badge on the boot.

So start with the engine details rather than the model name, because the same model is often sold with several engines. Confirm the model, the engine and the build year together, not just one of the three. Check recalls directly with the manufacturer using your VIN, since that is the only record tied to your car specifically. Then confirm what inspection and service interval applies to that engine.

Four questions and you know where you stand rather than guessing from what someone said online.

Summer is close, and the cooling system is the first part of the car to complain about it.

Coolant does not last forever. Hoses go brittle, a water pump starts weeping, and a small leak will sit there quietly until the first hot day in stopped traffic. That is when it stops being small, and an overheat on the Monash is a far more expensive morning than a check in the workshop.

A cooling check covers the condition of the coolant, whether any of it is escaping, and the components that move it around.

A logbook service is not one fixed job. What it covers depends on the car in front of you.

Service requirements change with the model, the engine, the age and the kilometres. The oil and filter are specified per engine, not per workshop. And the inspection is where the real value sits, because it tells you what needs attention before it turns into a bigger bill.

Warmer days are coming. Get the air conditioning sorted before you need it.

If the air is blowing warm, the usual cause is a leak, not a system that simply ran low. So we find the fault first, with leak detection and climate diagnostics, then regas with the right refrigerant for your car. Newer European models use R1234yf, older ones R134a, and they are not interchangeable.

Compressor and component repairs are done in house.
