Turbo is on. Engine is running well. Time to put some kms on it and do the first service.

It’s been a little while between posts. I’ve had a fair bit going on. The engine is in!!! Still waiting for a turbo. But I decided to keep pressing on. I have the intercooler modified and fitted and made a start racking up all the intercooler piping. Starting to come together.

Got the injector pump and injectors back. All fitted up with new injector pipes, new genuine timing belt and tensioner, taking special care to time the injector pump correctly using the factory specs. Really close to getting the engine in the car. Just waiting for the turbo.

Got the cylinder head all back on and torqued down. Remembered to put the oil restrictor back in. If this is left out it will leave the engine with oil pressure issues.

Got the pistons back. Within .03mm. Pretty happy with that.

While waiting for the pistons to come back from the machine shop, I’ve been cleaning a heap of parts and getting onto fitting what I can to keep the ball rolling. The inner timing cover including the oil pump have been fitted, as well as a quality Japanese water pump and genuine Toyota heater and turbo coolant feed pipes. These are a much neater option than big ugly fittings “T’eed” into the heater hoses. when adding a turbo to a 1hz. And when they aren’t very expensive, why wouldn’t you?

This is why it pays to always double check all measurements and clearances. Toyota has a maximum piston protrusion value of 0.65mm. This engine clearly shows a value of 0.83mm which is far to high. So the pistons have been sent back to the machine shop to have 0.38mm machined off of the crown. This gets the protrusion value down to 0.45mm which when coupled with the thickest head gasket will drop the compression ratio slightly, this will help reduce combustion pressures slightly which in turn will extend the engine life with the turbo.

Assembly of the piston and rods tonight. After checking ring groove clearance and ring end gaps, i checked the big end bearing and end float clearances. They all measured up spot on so it’s time to slip them in!

Fitted some extractors to a HD holden today. These require some slight modifications to the throttle linkage but other than that, they are a perfect fit. As always.
