With ex TC Alfred having made landfall, there are some flights coming into the Sunshine Coast Airport today and our first customers for the last five days are able to pick up their Aussie Bargain rental cars. To those who are arriving today and over the next few days, PLEASE do not travel anywhere you don’t really need to. There is still a large amount of flooding in multiple places around the Sunshine Coast. Remember your rental car is NOT authorised or covered for driving through flood waters. Things can get real expensive in a real hurry, even if you “accidentally did it”. Please stay safe out there and if it’s flooded, forget it.

**This warning is no longer current**

Tropical Cyclone Alfred, a category 2 system, is slowly moving towards the south-east Queensland coast with impacts expected to increase this evening.

Alfred is expected to remain a category 2 system until the centre starts to interact with the coast and Islands. The centre of Alfred is expected to cross the coast very early Saturday morning, most likely between Noosa and Coolangatta.

Gales with damaging wind gusts to 120 km/hr are developing near the coast between Cape Moreton and Cape Byron and are expected to develop along the remaining south-east Qld and north-eastern NSW coastal and island communities between Double Island Point and Ballina during Thursday evening, possibly extending as far south as Grafton.

Destructive wind gusts of up to 155 km/hr may develop about coastal and island locations near and to the south of the cyclone centre, as Alfred's destructive core approaches the coast.

A dangerous storm tide is likely along the coastal foreshore for exposed areas between Cape Moreton and Yamba, including the Gold Coast and Byron Bay beaches, ahead of the coastal crossing time on the high tides.

Abnormally high tides are likely to continue causing minor flooding of coastal low-lying areas between Double Island Point and Grafton, particularly during the time of high tides Thursday night into early Friday morning and Friday night into early Saturday morning.

Damaging surf leading to significant beach erosion remains likely for the open beaches between Double Island Point and Grafton, and further south over the NSW coast. Separate Coastal Hazard and Hazardous Surf warnings are current for south-east Qld and NSW coasts.

Heavy rainfall may develop for south-east Qld and north-eastern NSW from Thursday night. Heavy to locally intense rainfall which may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding may occur near and south of the cyclone centre as Alfred approaches and crosses the coast.

Separate Severe Weather Warning and Flood Watches are current for south-east Qld and north-east NSW.

Recent report from Higgins Storm Chasing. At ABCr we regularly rely on this company for accurate and up to date adverse weather reporting. Thank you to the Higgins team for all you do to keep us all safe.

RAIN & FLOOD FORECAST - TC Alfreds rain forecast is likely to be high along the coast and adjacent inland! The rain is expected to increase from midnight tonight around the Gold Coast into NENSW then spread further up into Brisbane & Ipswich on Friday. Rain is then expected to increase right across the South East QLD Coast and inland, Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast and inland on Saturday & Sunday. All areas from the Sunshine Coast south to Kempsey & inland to the ranges are likely to see totals of 250-500mm but it is very possible we could see some huge falls up to 1000mm especially on the southern side of the system at first then the Eastern side as it moves inland (red circle). Just west of the ranges on the Darling Downs / Granite Belt and Northern Tablelands could also see some very decent rainfall over 100mm. Flash flooding, dangerous rapid flooding & major river / creek flooding from this system could become a real serious issue and we have HIGH flood risk maps issued in the subscribers portal for that.
LISMORE "just take a deep breath & stay calm" you will get plenty of lead-time and warnings if it looks like being a major flood or the levee might breach. People in upstream catchments please share your reports during a flood event it really helps those downstream prepare too!
*Flood prone areas - take precautions now ahead of time. Have enough supplies & medication to last 3-5 days, move livestock to higher ground. Be ready to receive and act on stern advice or evacuations if needed*
Full TC Alfred forecast track / intensity, maps and warnings are available on our website and app

The situation with Cyclone Alfred remains fluid, with reports that the cyclones passage has slowed significantly, and some concern that it may evolve into a Category 3 cyclone. Let’s hope not. Passage of the cyclone seems to continually be moving in a more southerly direction indicating a possible landfall by Brisbane or even further south, but of course there is stilll time for a further change of direction. Due to the expectations over the past few days, ABCR is essentially closed Thursday and Friday as staff prepare our premises and homes for the expected winds and flooding. Decisions on how we operate on Saturday and Sunday will depend on developments over the next 48 hours. Most of our customers flying into the Sunshine Coast Airport have already made the wise decision to cancel or postpone their planned trips over this weekend. We applaud their decisions. The safety of our customers and staff, and indeed our fleet is our primary concern over this period. Please read the article below, and check out the links to the various airlines for flight cancellations. Please remember, even if you can fly into the Sunshine Coast, you may still be significantly affected by flood waters and closed roads even after the cyclone has made landfall. Please consider your travel arrangements and timing carefully. We look forward to welcoming back our customers and Coast visitors back again once expected flooding has resided and the roads are safe again.

Cyclone Alfred is now expected to make landfall late tomorrow or early on Saturday. Alfred is currently a Category 2...
