We’re asked regularly about tail tidies for Indian Motorcycles and believe us, we understand why riders want them. We ride too!
Unfortunately, because of the limited clearance between the rear fender and tyre on most Indian models, we’re yet to find a tail tidy option that we’re satisfied is both safe and compliant with Australian requirements.
We have repaired damaged rear lighting assemblies and wiring harnesses caused by the tyre contacting incorrectly positioned tail tidies as the suspension travels. Apart from the potential damage, a non-compliant number plate position, indicator spacing or lighting can also result in significant fines and your motorcycle being defected.
As much as we want to cater to every customer’s preferred look, we won’t recommend or install something we believe could be unsafe or illegal.
We would genuinely love to offer a clean-looking, safe and road-legal solution. But until we find one we’re confident meets those standards, we would rather be honest with our customers than sell something simply because it looks good.
The right look is important but getting home safely and legally matters more.

🏍️ TAIL TIDIES: CLEAN LOOKS WITHOUT THE TROUBLE 🏍️
We get it everyone wants the back of their bike to look clean, sharp and uncluttered. A good tail tidy can completely transform a motorcycle, but looking great shouldn’t mean making your bike unsafe or illegal.
Not every tail tidy sold online meets Australian requirements. Depending on the design and installation, potential issues can include:
🔧 The number plate being mounted at the wrong angle or not clearly visible
🔧 Rear indicators being positioned too close together
🔧 Missing or inadequate white number plate lighting
🔧 Reduced visibility to other road users
🔧 The removal of required reflectors
A super-short tail tidy might look great in a photo, but it could also attract unwanted attention on the road and potentially leave you with a defect or huge fine.
At Motorcycles of Mandurah, we want to help our customers build bikes that look awesome while remaining safe and road legal. We’re currently investigating quality options from reputable brands such as R&G that improve the appearance of the bike while meeting the relevant Australian Design Rules when correctly fitted.
