It's been a while since our last proper write up on a build.

Looking at what we have in the shop it's almost impossible to pick one above another as they are all knock outs in their own right.
This one has been kept close to our chests for a while.

Andrews 2387cc is destined for his stunning early bug to see some extremely quick street duties.

Kicking off at the beginning, she's based around the best 2 piece case available, a TF1 which are built for absolute strength. It features massive reinforcement through the pent roof and cam tunnel which has been dropped 0.100" to clear the big crank. Not only are these cases stronger by design, but they are also a much higher grade 356A titanium enriched aluminium alloy. The list of improvements in these cases over a stock one is as long as your arm.
Next in like we have the beating (spinning) heart of the beast. A S**t VolksRacer 4340 crank in 86mm. These things are tougher than nails and standard issue on the majority of our high horsepower builds.
Swinging from the crank are a S**t H Beam con rods also in 4340 CroMo steel. ⅜" ARP2000 bolts are standard fair for these high end rods and are the biggest fitted to VW H Beams.
Attached to the end of the rods are a lovely set of custom made Wiseco pistons. They are feather weight and allow the use of the monster valves in the heads.

Heads... Now these aren't your every day piece of kit.
They started life off as a set of Billet Remmele heads with matching manifolds but have been extensively reworked to suit the application. Porting, polishing, bowl work, and tapering of the guides yielded a shade over a 10% increase in flow without sacrificing velocity.
Adding to that a set of custom made beehive springs for absolute control of the top end allowing the Pauter Roller Rockers to do their job perfectly.
Opening and close the valves is a rather lumpy custom made cam with matched lifters.
Coming back to machining and finishing the bottom end, she sports an equaliser pulley to reduce the load on the centre main bearing and a light weight flywheel. All of the balance work netted a static balance of sub 0.1 grams and a full dynamic balance of sub 3 grams. The NOS genuine VW bearings will thank us for that care and attention being paid.
All of the tolerances were so close to spot on that the lightest of linishes brought the varience down to sub 5 ten thousandths of an inch across the mains and big ends.
For added security, the entirety of this motor has been ceramic coated in house. The chambers and piston crowns see a thermal barrier applied, the barrels a thermal wicking compound, the exhaust is coated with a different thermal barrier and the piston skirts have a dry film lubricant on them to retain oil and reduce scuffing.
On top of that, we have plateau honed the barrels to a much more conducive surface finish whilst torqued to spec to ensure the bore is as parallel as humanly possible.

Externally this beast is dressed to the nines in a CSP Carbon fibre Porsche style shroud and a CSP Python exhaust for enhanced breathing.
The Remmele billet inlet manifolds are topped with Jenvey throttle bodies and CSP billet bases and air cleaners by K&N and CSP bellcrank linkage for that super smooth pedal feel.

Injection and ignition are a combination of The Dub Shop hidden crank trigger and CB Cam Sync for full sequential sensing and a top of the line Haltech ECU unit presiding over the whole affair.

There are so many details of this build which really have to be seen to be appreciated as she's stunning in detail.

Stay tuned. Bigger things are coming.

Hi all!

Grants '62 came in a little on the tired side and has left with a whole lot more motivation courtesy of one of our 1679cc Super Stock motors and some minor suspension work.

She now points exactly how she should courtesy of replacing the completely worn out steering box and tweaking the tie rods to suit.

On to the good stuff.

As with all of our new build 1679cc engines, she's got a forged bottom end for maximum toughness and reliability from S**t VW.

An AS41 case that's been machined for a traditional full flow filtration system is the basis of this build. The filter in line is of course a genuine Mahle piece for air cooled engines.

To kick off things that go round and round, a S**t VolksRacer 4340 forged counterweighted crankshaft and S**t I beam rods that are forged 4340 and have way oversized for the application ⅜" ARP2000 rod bolts to hold them together for added protection.

A HD P&B assembly gives a bit more capacity without sacrificing reliability and our lovely little L3 heads make the most of the increased capacity with a touch more flow over stock heads and their reliability comes from stainless valves, single HD springs and cromo collects and retainers.

To make the most of the small bump up in capacity and flow in the heads, we have one of our custom cams and a new set of S**t ProStreet rockers to help get the gas in and out.
Speaking of getting gas in and out and also to go bang, that's handled by a pair of Solex carbs (with electric choke) and a stainless side winder exhaust and a NOS 009 dizzy that's been graphed for the motor with a genuine Beru coil.

The big question of course is how does it drive?
Like a champion.
She has the manners of a standard 1600 but offers so much more now.
If you get under her, she will sit you back in the seat and put a massive smile on your face.
She's more than capable of keeping up with modern traffic now.

We hear unfortunately frequently 'anything other than a stock engine won't get a warranty'. We say bullsh*t.
As with all our new builds, a 2 year, unlimited mileage warranty goes out as standard.
That's the confidence we have in the components we use, and in ourselves.

Stay tuned.
Big things are coming ;)

Its been a busy week up here at VWCL. We have been lucky enough to have a break from the usual North Queensland rain with some stunning days even if they were quite chilly.

We spent the week putting the finishing touches on Grants '62 with a new 1679cc Super stock motor and fair amount of work carried out on Steves '71 bug and had Sylvia drop in for a service on her gorgeous late bay.
Asides from that, we carried out one hell of a 2187cc turbo long block build with all the fruit destined for a '68 bug with some serious attitude and the initial blueprint of another very very serious 2387cc atmo motor destined for Adelaide.

Many more pics of the builds and work to come, but for now, here is a teaser for you.

Sorry for the state of the shop! We are having a massive re-jig and Shannon is getting his dream come true. A hermtically sealed and climate controlled engine building room =D

Stay tuned.
Big things are coming ;-)

With everything that's been going on around the world and it currently not been the greatest weather here in Malanda, we have had to make our own sunshine while being locked away.

This week we have been working on a lovely little 1200 which we have rebuilt back to bone stock with the highest quality parts available.

The case is the original for the vehicle, along with crank and rods.
The motor was virgin and had never been split which was a surprise to us when we started the disassembly.
The case is now on her first cut over, and the crank was linished as it was still well within spec. The rods however had to be closed and honed and have new gudgeon bushes installed to be on the safe side.

A NOS set of KS pistons and barrels were sourced along with a genuine NOS cam and lifters.

The heads we rebuilt here in house back to factory using 100% NOS genuine parts.

All powder coating was carried out by NQ Custom Powder Coating.
The wet black finish has to be seen in the flesh to appreciate how flawless their work really is.
They take a huge amount of pride in their work and it shows in their product.

A genuine Ernst muffler was sourced and along with the inlet manifold and heater boxes got the ceramic coating treatment.

We have a few more little jobs to do down the track which involves changing out the 009 for the correct genuine dizzy along with installing a rebuilt genuine Australian made fuel pump and regulator. We just need to have new diaphragms made up for the units which we have hoarded over the years from cars that have been parted out. This will be done very soon to round out this little gem and bring her back to 100% original as she would have been when she rolled off the production line in 1964.

Earlier this week we finished up some quite extensive work on a drop top bug and a low light so it will be good to see them back on the road and cruising around FNQ very soon (when we are allowed back on the roads for cruises).

The little bug now runs and stops significantly better than when she came in and the low light is very close to being back on the road after a few years out of the scene.

Stay safe and stay tuned and as always,
Big things are coming.

Another build done. This time, not a huge one, but super smooth none the less.

This time Tania's little bug has a bit more motivation in the way of a little 1641cc. To say it's got a bit more poke then the very tired 1300 that was in there is an understatement.

The block has been bored and full flowed with an external filter installed for longevity.
The German crank and rods a have been fully machined to bring them back into spec to go another round.
A new set of 87mm piston and barrels have been installed too.
The heads are genuine 040 heads which we rebuilt and up rated here in house with stainless valves, single HD springs and CroMo collets and retainers.
The mild cam and lifters are courtesy of CB Performance and matched with stock genuine rockers on HD shafts with spacers to keep them running dead true.
The oiling system has also been uprated with a genuine HD Schadek Oil Pump.

On the induction side to keep it all mild, a set of single throat Solex carbs has been installed for easy running and tune.
A genuine SVDA dizzy has been reconditioned to get the advance to where it should be for this motor to keep her strong down low, but not too hot up top.
And Vintagespeed have supplied one of their great sounding exhaust systems to round out the package.

All in all, she has had some life breathed into her and will be good for many many more turns around the sun.

Feel free to drop us a line here, or on 0417725118 to have a chat about any motor needs you have. We ship Aus wide regularly and nothing is too hard to design and build to suit your needs.

Stay Tuned.

While we've been quiet on the socials, we are never idle in the shop.

One build we have just finished up is now in a 356 Speedster. And she's a little weapon.

Built around our normal standard of no compromise, she is now a 2.2 litres of genuine Weber fed goodness.

When she came in, it was fitted with an AMR500 Supercharger kit on what the owner had been told was a 'fully built motor'.
Unfortunately we have now seen this too many times. A second hand, bone stock bottom end (including the cam which was out of adjustment) and a lightened flywheel was the extent of the previous builders efforts. But it did have a new case at time of building... That's was its saving grace.

The little AMR had been set up with so much overdrive that it was way beyond its continuous operational limits. Unfortunately this lead to it having disintegrated and gone through the motor.

Public service announcement:
An AMR500 is designed for operation on 600cc-900cc motors, not 1600cc motors.

Que VWCL and back to the build.

We waved the wand over the case, carrying out a few of our in house mods plus the normal full flow procedure.

She's now got some displacement courtesy of a forged stroker crank from CB and matched H Beam rods.
We retained the Lightened flywheel and added a CB Billet alloy pulley before dynamic balancing the whole shooting match.

A Forged and ceramic coated piston and barrel kit was added to the mix for outright strength as this little car will be competing in the Targa Great Barrier Reef.

Cam wise we went old school on this one with the venerable W120 with matched lifters.
People who know me also know that I am extremely selective of camshafts and don't usually reach for a W series cam as they have been surpassed many times over now, but in this case, it fit the bill perfectly.

To round out the old school build a set of hand ported S**t Super D Port heads with 42×37mm valves and S**t Pro 1.25:1 rockers with HD Manton CroMoly push rods ensure that the top end will breathe and be ultra reliable for years to come.

The owner had an MSD unit installed in the car which we were able to check over and ensure full function before replacing the cap and re commisioning.

Induction is handled by dual Genuine Weber 44IDF carbs on a CB manifold and linkage kit which we match ported in house.
When tuning for lean best idle, even with big heads, big rockers and a big cam, she still purred all the way down to 450rpm.
This is why we only ever use the real deal. You can't get the knock off's to such a fine state of tune.

Rounding the package out is an 1⅝" stainless side winder exhaust system.

Many many hours went into this gorgeous piece of kit, and we can't be more proud to have our name to the build.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us through the last year and we look forward to bigger and better times to come.

As always,
Stay tuned.
Big things are on the way.
