Apologies for not keeping you updated but Following on from a previous post on the Southern Cross EFD rebuild here is some photos of the block being bored out for a sleeve, honing of the new cylinder and decking. As you can see the bore now looks amazing and probably better than when it was originally built. Huge thanks to Lee Mears Engine Reconditioning for finding an unusual size sleeve and doing an amazing job on a difficult engine.

Southern Cross EFD strip down, it all came apart reasonably easily, all studs came out, but we will replace a few that had stretched. All bearings are in good condition and will be refitted. As can be seen the bore is beyond use and a sleeve will be fitted. The piston is in perfect order with new rings fitted recently. These engines have a unique design of the combustion chamber with the top half in the head and the bottom half on the piston crown. This was to overcome construction difficulties as this was the smallest air cooled diesel made at the time. The bare block was steamcleaned with our Andersen Steam cleaner ready for Lee Mears Engine Reconditioning to resleeve.

We are currently working on this little Southern Cross EFD diesel in a beautiful timber boat.
Owner contacted us when the engine couldn’t be started, after cleaning and checking/setting the injector, it was determined that a lack of compression is the issue. Also made a new crank handle. Please like and follow for updates as we progress with this restoration.

Have now completed the fuel system on the HSCS, the original fuel filter was quite rusty so we sandblasted the internals and was quite surprised how good they were. Next it was fitted to the tractor with new bolts as the old ones were broken off in the block. Bent up all new copper fuel lines with flared unions. Resealed everything and check for leaks. Almost ready for first fire up.

Replacement timing belt for this Land Rover 200tdi engine as it wasn’t running very well. Once stripped down the discovery of crank sporket being badly worn ment a wait of about a week for a new one to arrive from John Craddock Ltd in the UK. Reassembled with new belt, tensioner & gaskets from All Four x 4 Spares, Service & Dismantling
Now running better then ever 👍
