A cane harvester owner with a large 110,000-tonne contract and who uses PM L lubricants had completed harvesting for the day and began carrying out the daily service. He could smell extreme pressure gear oil, with its strong, unique pungent odour. He tracked the smell to its source. He found oil had dripped onto the underside of a cleat of the John Deere 3520’s track. It is a full-track machine. On closer inspection, he discovered there was virtually no lubricant left in the hub that was leaking. Having no idea as to the period of time the final drive hub was operating with little or next to no oil, he took the precautionary step and replaced the hub with a spare. With a bit more than three litres of lubricant in the two epicyclic hubs on the 20-tonne machine, operators need better than good oil to offset the demands expected of them.
When the hub was eventually pulled down, the owner found the componentry was in good condition, but the amazing thing was that there were only a couple of spoonfuls of lubricant found, and what was there was still red. He was amazed by the realization of what this meant. The rear seal was replaced, and the hub was eventually put back into service, which returned good working temperatures.
The owner called PM to retell the story and praised the lubricant for its resilience.
