In 1947, a Dutch Volkswagen importer named Ben Pon visited the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg and observed workers using a strange homemade parts mover built on a Beetle chassis. It was ugly, boxy, yet incredibly practical.

So practical, in fact, that Pon sketched a version of it in his notebook right there on the factory floor!

That initial rough little doodle became the very first concept for the Kombi.

When Volkswagen released it in 1950, it wasn’t promoted as a trendy camper or surf van. Instead, it was a hardworking commercial vehicle designed to haul tools, bread, mail, and workers around post-war Europe. However, it was embraced by the public as so much more than that, and soon became one of the most iconic vehicles in history.
