Schools are back! 🚸

Drivers are reminded that when approaching school crossings, they need to slow down to 40km/h or less, watch for children, and remember - the crossing must be completely clear of all pedestrians, including the crossing supervisor (pictured), before driving through.

Avoid parking too close to school crossings, as supervisors need a clear field of view in all directions to keep everyone safe.

Reduced speed limits, school crossings and parking restrictions around schools are in place to manage traffic flow during peak times and maximise safety for children and all road users.

Let's all do our part to keep kids safe on their way to and from school 💛

Road safety is everyone's responsibility.

About two-thirds of fatal and serious injury collisions on our roads are the result of basic driving errors. That’s things like low level speeding, failing to obey road signs, and being distracted behind the wheel.

106 lives have already been lost on Victorian Roads so far this year, that’s 5 more than the same time last year.

Reducing your speed by 5km/h is all it takes significantly reduce the chance of being involved in a collision. And if you are in a crash, it may lower the severity of injuries.

Tragically, three lives were lost over the weekend. And just this morning, three more lives were lost at collisions in Swan Hill West and Clayton South, marking a grim start to National Road Safety Week.

As part of National Road Safety Week, were urging all Victorians to prioritise the safety of all road users and take the road safety pledge.

National Road Safety Week runs from 11 to 18 May.

You can find out more about NRSW and take the pledge here ➡️ roadsafetyweek.com.au

We’re issuing an urgent warning to vehicle owners, as intelligence reveals tech savvy thieves are behind a surge in car thefts across the state.

Increasing numbers of cars are being stolen – more than 70% from residential streets, driveways, and other community locations – with no associated burglary, robbery or carjacking.

This trend has coincided with third party electronic devices, which are capable of programming or mimicking keys, becoming increasingly available for purchase. Once inside a vehicle, this device can be plugged into the cars on board diagnostic port to override the security system and start the engine.

Police intelligence suggests certain makes and models with electronic push start technology are being targeted, given no ignition key is required. We’re urging owners of these vehicles to look at a range of preventative measures to help deter thieves, including an on-board diagnostic port lock which prevents an offender connecting a reprogramming device to your vehicle. These locks are highly affordable and self-installable.

As always, police urge the community to take simple steps to stop opportunistic thieves in their tracks.
🚗 Lock your vehicle, even when parked at home.
🚗 Park your vehicle off the street if possible.
🚗 Remove items such as keys and garage fobs.
🚗 Keep valuables out of sight or out of the vehicle entirely.

isn’t just about riders, it’s about all road users ensuring they know how to drive safely around bikes.

This year, at least 60% of motorcycle fatalities have been multi-vehicle collisions, and failing to give way identified as one of the most common factors.

While riders can do many things to reduce the risk of a crash, there are also simple actions that drivers can take, including:

🏍️ indicating your intention to turn or change lanes well in advance
🏍️ when changing lanes, use mirrors and head checks to make sure blind spots are clear
🏍️ give motorcyclists enough room to manoeuvre
🏍️ make eye contact with riders, so they know they've been seen.

You can read more about both rider and driver awareness here ➡️ https://go.vic.gov.au/3A4fc7e

🚸 School is back tomorrow!

Students around Bass Coast are excited to return to school this week, which means 40km/h zones and school crossings will be back in operation.

To keep our community safe, remember to slow down around schools, look out for pedestrians and school crossing supervisors and make sure the crossing is completely vacated before driving through.
