Battery Testing Report
The seven-year-old Toyota battery under examination remains in relatively good condition; it appears nearly new and continues to pass standard battery tests, although it is undoubtedly beyond its optimal service life. Please see the detailed analysis below. As a reminder, in reference to a well-known phrase, "winter is coming," cold weather can significantly impair battery performance. If there is any uncertainty regarding the battery's condition, it is advisable to have it tested prior to experiencing potential failure, unless the intention is simply to delay an inconvenient situation.
Customer concern involved a battery becoming depleted after the vehicle was stationary in the driveway for several days.
The battery was evaluated using electronic testing equipment and passed the inspection. This suggests there may be a loose connection associated with the starter motor or a parasitic drain.
Procedures performed:
- The battery was charged continuously for 24 hours.
- The parasitic drain was checked first and found to be ok at time of testing which was 0.02 amps
- An older method of testing, the carbon pole test, was employed; the battery passed, though results were borderline, which we generally interpret as acceptable.
- An oscilloscope was connected for further analysis; corresponding images are included.
- A comprehensive battery test indicated the voltage dropped to 6 volts under load. On one occasion, subsequent tests recorded a voltage below 5 volts, whereas most vehicle systems require a minimum of approximately 9.5 volts to operate normally.
- A third evaluation was conducted using the N2 Bluetooth multimeter, simulating engine cranking without fuel injection for 15 seconds. The battery failed this test, with the voltage falling below 9 volts and remaining low within three seconds. The test was terminated after 10 seconds to avoid potential damage due to high current draw from the starter motor under low-voltage conditions.
Conclusion: Although the battery passed standard testing equipment, the real-world assessments indicate that it has surpassed its used service life and should be replaced accordingly.
