Many Atto3 car owners are curious about the rumored issue of rust under bolted-on components. In the pictures, this car has been driven for less than 2000 kilometers. Despite the front-end damage, the internal components of the car's front end remain almost intact. It can still start and operate normally, making it a great loss to be written off. The pictures, taken right after receiving the car, clearly show different rusting patterns in the screw locations, distinguishing between the damaged and undamaged areas. We don't know the history of the car, it may have sat in a yard near the sea fro months before being auctioned

More on the Outlander. The battery pack is out and assessed. We've got (about) 3 choices. 1. Replace the existing 40Ah cells with the 46Ah ones from the next gen. 2. Replace with larger cells, or 3, convert to EV - remove the petrol engine and fuel tank and make an entirely new battery running all the way under the floor into the engine bay with about a 25% increase in the physical space. We estimate a range with this scenario of 250-300kms. We'd have to add fast charging to this model, too. This would take months of development, but may be easier than one of our other projects, converting a 2004 Pajero to EV!

If we replace with larger cells in the existing box, we have to design and manufacture new BMS cables, busbars and cooling as the new cells would go in in a different format than the original, and we'd have to instal a new VCU to use the new capacity, but the advantage is almost double the capacity in the battery. This would take months rather than weeks of development and $$s.

In the short term we've decided to go with scenario one, to replace the existing cells with new ones, and we're looking into what cells are available, hopefully with higher capacity. As we have a development vehicle, we're going to look more closely into scenario 3 once the new battery is in...

New project! Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has a massive Achilles Heel. Despite having a petrol engine on board, if the high voltage battery, which gives power to the electric motors, dies, the entire car is undriveable, it just won't start and it could stop anywhere! So we've bought a development car and here we are about to strip the battery from the car to open it up and design a new battery array in the existing box to instal and sell to existing owners which will keep their cars on the road for another decade, plus higher capacity than the original That's a win!

3 weeks ago we posted that we were working on a new Chinese ute a client has in for appraisal for Australia. The ute was in our workshop with a 12V battery charging issue. When we returned the fixed ute, I found this in the yard, (next to the EC-11 E-cargo, a Transit-sized van) built on the same chassis as the ute, which means 3 metres of room behind the cab, thus it would be a great delivery or tradie van
