​We recently tracked down a recurring Cylinder 1 misfire on an ix35. While the ignition coil and spark plug were initially suspect, the true culprit was hiding deeper inside the engine: worn valve stem guides.
​When clearance gets too loose, engine oil is drawn past the guides into the combustion chamber. As that oil burns, it bakes heavy carbon deposits right onto the spark plug—leading to that annoying misfire code.

​This Ford Kuga came in with a rough run, and our scan tool pointed straight to a Cylinder No. 4 misfire.
​What we found: Brand new spark plugs with thread damage, and a healthy ignition coil.
​The deeper look: Dropping our inspection camera down the cylinder revealed coolant pooling inside, drowning the spark.
​The root cause: A blown head gasket letting coolant into the combustion chamber.
