We have had a gentleman call this morning, out in the bush SOMEWHERE having bike problems. The drama we had, was this gentleman was not from the area and could not tell us where he was.
Thankfully, someone was passing by and has got him headed in the right direction, but it has got me realizing how unprepared some people are to explore the beauty we have around us.

Now fancy GPS units and trackers (Garmin, Spot, Zoleo) are fantastic tools, but can be pricey to buy, and have subscription fees. If these things aren't possible for you, PLEASE at least have the basic fee tools available on any phone. In an absolute emergency, a marine style EPIRB will work on land too.

Learn to use the mapping programs built into your phone (ie Google Maps), look on your app store and get the "Emergency +" app and find a free basic topographic map app (on android I use "Australia Topo Maps") and gain a basic understanding of topographic maps. These will work with no signal. As long as you can see the sky, you will get enough gps signal to know where you are.
The Emergency + app will list your longitude and latitude, but far simpler for the everyday person is "What3Words" ( www.what3words.com ). This breaks the entire earth into 3x3m squares that are identified by a unique combo of 3 simple words (for example where I am sitting in the office is ///clan.sugars.seniors ). Knowing how to get this and giving it to Emergency services, lets them know exactly where you are with no confusing directions.

Now this mornings issues weren't an emergency, and this gentleman got on his way eventually; but if he had those simple free apps, he might not have even had to call, but when he did, i could have located him in seconds to help.

Don't wait until your desperate, play with the apps now so you can help yourself.
