Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, and you can't see it happening.

Moisture in your brake fluid lowers the temperature at which the fluid boils, which means it:
Reduces braking performance when you brake hard
Can corrode brake parts from the inside

Your brakes can feel fine while this builds up, until they don't.

We test your brake fluid at every service, and if it needs replacing, we tell you and explain why. If it's in good condition, we leave it alone, and you don't pay for a change you don't need.

Your diesel has been telling you about its DPF long before the light comes on.

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps soot from your exhaust.
Short trips and low-speed driving can stop it from clearing itself correctly. This means the soot builds up, and if it doesn't automatically carry out a burn by itself, the light shows on the dash, and this means the filter is already struggling.

A blocked DPF can mean:
🔺 Reduced power
🔺 Higher fuel use
🔺 A repair bill that grows the longer you wait

At Ipswich City Mechanical, we inspect the DPF % on every diesel service where one is fitted. If it needs a manual burn, we'll let you know before we go ahead and do it, as we need to do it before we change the oil.

Catching an issue early costs you a lot less than fixing it late (or costing you more in fuel).

A $199 service looks like a saving, especially when your budget is tiiiiight!

A cheap service usually means:
⚠️ A no-name oil and filter
⚠️ A basic check of tyres and brakes only
⚠️ No full safety inspection or written report
⚠️ And then there are the extras added later that weren't in the fine print

And a major service isn't the same at every workshop either. We actually hate and don't do 'major' services, because what actually classifies what as 'major' service these days? You could be replacing a fluid that is still in good condition, which would be a waste of your money.

At Ipswich City Mechanical, the safety inspection is the same on every service; new car, 20-year-old car, general or log book. You get a report with photos and/or video, and any items we find of concern, we order them from most urgent to least urgent so you know what needs doing, when, and what it costs.

Paying less doesn't mean you get more.

ALWAYS check what's included before you book, and you only need to ask for an itemised estimate so you can compare what you're getting.

The oils most workshops never mention (or even check).

They all wear out over time, just like your engine oil does.
The problem is that nobody sticks a reminder label on it, so it gets forgotten (or skipped because there is no time to check, which could be why your service is cheap).

And here's the thing: if it is skipped long enough and you think you've saved $$ on servicing, it can turn into a $3,000+ gearbox rebuild. We see it far too often, and that's not fair to you! If you had known the condition, you could have done something sooner.

The good news is, we check ALL oils every time your car comes in for a service.
We also take a photo of the tests so you can see the condition AND so we can monitor them between each service.

It doesn't cost you a cent extra, it's part of all services we carry out regardless if your car is 2 years old or 20 years old.

"Feels fine" is not a safety check, it's a guess.

A test drive won't tell you your brakes are pulling harder on one side.
A visual check won't either and you could be losing stopping power and never know it, until the one time you need it most.

We use the -T-Stop test. It gives us real numbers on paper, for every wheel.
This is proof of exactly what your brakes are doing and if they are operating at 100%.

Don't rely on someone's opinion of how your brakes feel.

Your battery won't usually warn you before it dies.

Sometimes there is no light on the dash or no noise under the bonnet.
One morning your car starts fine and then the next morning it won't.

And of course it'll happen at the most inconvenient time, like when you're loading the kids in for school drop-off and then you go to start the car and... nothing; the car won't turn over.
This is the moment you just want to scream and yell "FFS!"

Now, we're not fortune tellers; however, a battery and charging system test at every service (or at least 2 times a year) is what can usually catch these moments before they happen.

And this time of year, when the weather is turning from cold to warm is when we see a rise in battery failures. So if you are unsure when your battery was last tested or if it is over 4 years old, drop in and let us run a battery test for your peace of mind.
