Skipping checks leads to bigger issues.

That's true for any car. And with EVs it's catching people off guard, because the drive feels smooth right up until something fails.

Cooling systems that keep the battery at the right temperature.
Battery health that degrades quietly over time.
Electrical components that wear without obvious signs.

Left too long, what was a routine check becomes a repair. And some EV repairs aren't cheap.

The assumption that electric means maintenance-free is exactly what lets these issues get ahead of people.
We recommend yearly inspections and these checks matter regardless of what your manufacturer says. Actually, they matter a lot!

And almost everyone does it.

The noise starts. Life gets busy. It's probably nothing. You'll book it in after the school holidays. After payday. After this week settles down.

"EVs don't need servicing" — we hear this a lot.
And we get it. Fewer moving parts, no oil changes, simpler drivetrain. On the surface it sounds logical.
But it's one of the most common misconceptions we see — and it's the one that leads to problems being missed until they're expensive.
EVs still have cooling systems that need checking. Batteries that degrade and need monitoring. Electrical components that wear, fail, and don't always announce it with a warning light.
The car feels fine. Drives fine. Until it doesn't.
Don't assume it's fine because it's electric. Check it.

Most mechanics won't tell you this… preventative work is always cheaper than reactive.
ALWAYS.

A tyre that needed rotating, becomes a tyre that needs replacing.
Brake pads that needed monitoring becomes rotors that need replacing.
A coolant system that needed a flush becomes an engine that overheated on the highway.

Same car. Very different bills.

The frustrating part? Most of it is completely avoidable. Not with expensive repairs, with honest, regular checks and catching things early before they decide your timeline for you.

Happy Birthday to our 1st year apprentice, Linkon!

Linkon joined us last year for work experience through school and what stood out to us wasn't how quickly he was learning, it's was the attitude he brought every week.

Keen. Coachable. And always showing up. That's the kind of person who becomes a great technician and we're glad we get to be part of that journey.

This is where people get caught buying a used EV.

They buy the EV. Everything seems fine. Then normal life starts, school runs, weekend trips, the daily commute, and they begin to notice the range isn't what they expected.

They are charging it more than they planned. Rerouting trips they didn't need to reroute before. Watching the battery percentage drop faster than the numbers said it should.

A weak battery doesn't announce itself. It quietly makes everything slightly harder, every single day.
More time tethered to a charger. And when it comes time to sell, a resale value that reflects exactly what the battery health report says.

Thinking of buying a used EV?

We're seeing more and more people around Ipswich making the switch to EV's.
And here's something most buyers of 2nd hand EV's don't find out until after they've bought it or even many years later...

Two EVs can look identical. Same make, same model, same year. Same price, even.
But their battery health? Completely different.

One might hold 95% of its original capacity. The other, 68%.
You won't see it on the outside. You won't feel it on a short test drive around the block. And the seller isn't trying to hide anything from you because they don't even know themselves.

After you've purchased it though, you'll eventually notice in the range you get, the charge times, and eventually the repair bill when you need to replace the EV battery.

Battery degradation is the thing used EV buyers are most caught out by. And it's the thing that's hardest to spot without the right tools!

So if you're looking at buying a used EV, this matters more than the colour or the klms!
