Did you know we can also repair your windscreen chips?
That small chip might not look like much now, but it doesn’t take much for it to spread into a full crack—especially with our roads and temperature changes.
We use a professional windscreen repair system that fills the chip and restores the structural strength of the glass, helping prevent it from turning into a much bigger (and more expensive) problem.
Quick. Cost-effective. Done right.
If you’ve got a chip starting, get onto it early and save yourself a windscreen replacement.
Send us a message or give us a call to book in.

Timing Belt = Small Part… BIG Consequences

Just pulled this apart — and this is exactly why timing belts are NOT something you “wait and see” on.

What you’re looking at here is a failed timing belt… shredded belt, damaged components, and internal engine chaos. This didn’t happen overnight — it happened because the timing belt and associated components weren't replaced when they should have been.

What does a timing belt do?
Your timing belt keeps your engine’s valves and pistons perfectly synchronized. When it fails… they collide. And when they collide — it’s game over.

- Bent valves
- Damaged pistons
- Broken components
- Full engine rebuild or replacement

And yes… this turns a relatively affordable maintenance job into a thousands-of-dollars repair.

Timing belts don’t just fail from kms — AGE matters too.
Even if you’re not driving much, the rubber deteriorates over time.

Typical intervals:
• 90,000 – 150,000 km
• OR every 5–7 years (whichever comes first)

If you’re unsure when yours was last done — that’s your sign.

Prevention > Repair
A timing belt service is routine maintenance.
An engine rebuild is not.

Don’t gamble with it — because when it goes, it doesn’t give a warning.

If you’re not sure where your vehicle is at, reach out. Better to check now than post photos like this later.

Fraser Island Recovery – HMR 4x4 Tilt Tray
The boss took the HMR 4x4 tilt tray over to K'gari (Fraser Island) today for a test run — and to recover a broken-down vehicle.
Bush tracks, Soft sand, Beach run, the truck handled it all without breaking a sweat. When the job’s off-road, HMR has the gear to get there.

Another one of those “this one had us chasing our tail” jobs.

This Ford Falcon had been intermittently cutting out, then restarting like nothing happened. It kept throwing crank angle sensor faults, so naturally that’s where the diagnosis started.

Sensors checked. Wiring checked. Testing, road testing, more testing.

Eventually we decided to pull the ECU to inspect it internally for blown capacitors… and instead found this.

Green corrosion all through the connector pins.

Ford, in their infinite wisdom, mounted the ECU under the dash and windscreen with the plug facing straight up. After 20 years of leaking windscreens, water tracks down, sits in the connector and slowly corrodes everything it touches.

The ECU itself was fine. It was the terminals that were failing intermittently.

A thorough clean-up of the pins, proper refit of the plastic cover, and this Falcon is back to running as it should.

Sometimes the problem isn’t the part you replace. It’s the one getting quietly eaten away by time and moisture.

If your vehicle is cutting out intermittently or throwing random sensor faults, don’t guess. Get it diagnosed properly.

Air conditioning making noise?

If your fan sounds like it’s got rocks in it, this could be why.

This blower motor came out of a vehicle this week and it has definitely seen better days. The fan cage is completely packed with debris and insulation, which throws the balance out and puts excessive strain on the motor. The result is vibration, noise, poor airflow and eventually total failure.

What starts as “just a noise” can quickly turn into no air conditioning at all and in Queensland heat, that’s not something you want to deal with.

If your A/C is rattling, squealing or not pushing air like it used to, get it checked before it turns into a bigger repair.

We can diagnose and replace blower motors, clean out debris and get your air conditioning system working properly again.

Are Your Caravan Tyres Too Old?

We’ve seen a run of caravan and trailer tyre failures over the past couple of weeks, so we thought it was worth sharing a quick reminder.

With the road conditions the way they are at the moment, older tyres are really being tested. Even if the tread looks good, age plays a big part in tyre safety.

You can check the age of your tyres on the sidewall. There’s a four digit stamp. The first two numbers are the week it was made and the last two are the year.

For example, 3418 means the tyre was made in the 34th week of 2018.

As a guide, once a tyre is over 5 years old it should be inspected regularly. Once it reaches 7 years old, it should be replaced. That is regardless of how much tread is left.

As tyres age, the internal bonding and structure begin to break down. This can lead to tread separation or sudden failure at highway speeds, especially under caravan or trailer load.

A blowout can cause expensive damage to guards, wiring and panels, and in some cases can lead to serious accidents.

Before your next trip, have a quick look at all caravan and trailer tyres, including the spare. It only takes a minute and can save a lot of trouble.

If you’re unsure, call into Howard Motor Repairs and we’ll check them for you. If they need replacing, we can supply and fit new tyres here at HMR to keep you ready for the road.

Safe travels everyone.

Retro is rolling back into the workshop.

We’ve got something a little special in the shed at Howard Motor Repairs.

Wide Bay Towing & Salvage has handed us the keys to their 1981 Ford F350 tow truck, parked up for more than five years and now getting the full HMR treatment to bring it back to life.

Big steel. Old-school attitude. 460 big block power.
This isn’t about shiny for the sake of it, it’s about getting a proper old truck back on the road doing what it was built to do.

Bringing back the days when tow trucks had real presence, real noise and real character.

We’ll be sharing the process as this classic makes its comeback.
Stay tuned... retro is back.
