After many years with ADEC Kedge, Murray Isles is heading into retirement. ⚓️

As one of the longest-standing members of our team, Murray has played an important role at Kedge for many years. In his role as a senior naval architect and marine surveyor, he has brought decades of marine industry knowledge to his work and shared that experience generously with the people around him, making a lasting contribution to our team.

Thank you, Murray, for everything you have brought over the years. Your knowledge, experience and good humour will be greatly missed.

We wish you all the very best for a happy and well-earned retirement.

Here are some snaps of Murray and his vessel designs that were taken over the years.

ADEC Kedge is well known for marine surveys, but have you ever wondered what our Naval Architects are working on behind the scenes?

They support vessel design, new builds, modifications, stability calculations, technical drawings and documentation for survey and compliance requirements. Their work helps commercial operators make better decisions early, before design choices may lead to delays, costly rework or compliance issues.

With Marine Surveyors and Naval Architects working together, ADEC Kedge can support clients through both the technical design and survey side of a project.

Our friendly office team is available for any questions Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. Call 1300 899 596 or email [email protected].

While many know ADEC Kedge for our trusted marine survey work, there is also a lot of important work happening behind the scenes with our naval architecture team.

Before a vessel reaches survey, there is plenty of thinking, planning and problem-solving already underway.

Our Naval Architects are often involved early on, when an owner is planning a new vessel, considering a modification, or trying to understand whether an idea will actually work in practice.

It might be a drawing that needs review, a stability question that needs answering, or a design challenge that needs a practical way forward.

This early technical input can save a lot of trouble later. It helps operators understand what is possible, what compliance considerations may apply, and which decisions are best made before the work progresses too far.

We’ll be sharing more soon about what our naval architects do at ADEC Kedge, because their work is a big part of how we support vessel owners and operators long before a vessel is ready for survey.

A question we often get is whether the 10-yearly survey is just the same as the 5-yearly.

The short answer is no.

A 5-yearly Renewal Survey includes both in-water and out-of-water inspections. A 10-yearly Renewal Survey includes all of that, plus additional inspections that may apply depending on the vessel. These could include (amongst other items): thickness testing, fuel tank and void space inspections, foam buoyancy inspections if your vessel is fitted with level floatation, and removing the chain from the chain locker. That can mean more preparation, more access requirements, and in some cases extra coordination with third parties.

If your next renewal survey is coming up, it is worth understanding early which category you are in and what you may need to arrange ahead of time.

If you are unsure what applies to your vessel, talk to our team before survey day.

Hobart has a way of weaving maritime history into the everyday. 🌊

For generations, people here have built their lives around the sea: fishers, shipbuilders, crews, and the many hands behind the work.

A small nod to the people who know these waters like the back of their hand.

Survey hold-ups often come down to a few practical things that were missed in the lead-up.

Missing paperwork. Service items that are out of date. Parts of the vessel not being ready to inspect. Changes made since the last survey that were not raised early.

These are the sorts of things that can turn a straightforward survey into extra back and forth.

Every vessel is different, but asking a few questions early and getting organised ahead of time can make a big difference on the day.

If you are unsure what may need attention before your next survey, talk to our friendly office team.

If your next survey is on the horizon, a bit of preparation early on can make the process a lot smoother.

Start by confirming what survey is due and when. From there, complete the AMSA 521 application, send through your survey documents, gather your key vessel paperwork, and check that any required inspection and service records are up to date.

It is also worth making sure the vessel is ready for inspection, as some areas or items may need to be opened up, removed, cleaned, or made accessible ahead of time.

Every vessel is different, but knowing what is needed early can help avoid delays later. If you are unsure what applies to your vessel, talk to our team before survey day.

That’s a wrap on our Dry Dock Training in Hobart. ⚓️

Over four days, participants worked through the technical foundations, calculations, and practical considerations that underpin safe and effective dry docking operations.

Training like this is vital because dry docking is not something to approach with guesswork. It relies on sound engineering principles, careful planning, and people who understand what is at stake.

Thank you to Alex Stiglich from DM Consulting for sharing his expertise, to everyone who took part and contributed to a strong few days of learning and discussion, and to Megan and the team at Mouth Waters Café for hosting us and keeping everyone well looked after with fantastic catering throughout the week.
