Drivers, we’ve just welcomed another modern classic into the Drive Millennium showroom, and this one’s got a party trick. The roof comes off. 😎

Meet the legendary BMW E46 M3 Convertible.

Under that beautifully sculpted bonnet lives BMW’s iconic 3.2-litre S54 naturally aspirated straight-six. Individual throttle bodies, 252kW, an 8,000rpm redline and one of the most intoxicating soundtracks ever to come out of Munich.

No turbochargers. No spaceship noises. Just proper old-school M Division engineering, rear-wheel drive and the option to enjoy it all with the wind in your hair. Prefer coupes over convertibles? Fair enough, but for us, we can’t get enough of that noise!

The E46 M3 is already a modern classic, but the convertible adds another dimension to the experience. It’s a sports car you can genuinely enjoy with the whole family, provided they don’t mind you taking the long way home. 😉

🚨NEW STOCK ALERT - DAKAR AMG🚨

Well…kinda 🤷

Needless to say, Drivers, we’re not exactly big soft-roader fans here at Drive Millennium. Generally speaking, we’d MUCH rather have a hot-hatch than a…not-hatch.

But then we drove the Mercedes-AMG GLA45, and something felt… suspiciously familiar. 🤔 In fact, it felt almost exactly like an A45. Which surprised us because the soft-roader version of anything is typically a pretty poor comparison.

So we did some digging, and it turns out there’s surprisingly little downside and some genuinely sensible upside for the urban Driver who grabs the keys to a GLA.

Underneath, it’s essentially the same animal as the A45. Same hand-built 2.0L AMG turbo engine producing 265kW and 450Nm, same 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and same 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, very similar dimensions, near identical performance.

But the GLA45 gets 44mm more ground clearance, 80 litres more boot space, a higher seating position , 6 litre expanded fuel tank, 1” larger diameter rims, matte plastic trims, and weirdly enough has a lower drag coefficient. Oh, and a little extra suspension compliance. All while giving away just two-tenths of a second in the sprint to 100km/h.

That’s an awful lot of extra practicality for a very slight sacrifice in performance.

Oh, and there’s a reason we’ve suddenly become interested in these things…

👀 We’ve got an absolutely stunning 2015 GLA45 AMG with just 46,000km preparing to launch at Drive Millennium for mid $30’s.

Which got us thinking…

Is the GLA45 basically the Porsche 911 Dakar of the A45 world? 🏁

Same fundamental performance DNA, just a little more height, versatility and everyday usability.

And yes (before anyone asks) we’ve already checked. A Rothmans livery will absolutely fit.

What car would you “Dakar” to make it a little more liveable?!

It’s the sort of car you buy when you’ve promised your other half you’re going to be more responsible with your automotive choices.

And here’s the part that makes it even more interesting: it cost $320,000 when new, but it will be listed for under $60,000.

Something rather special has just arrived at Hobart’s Home of Horsepower.

Oooooff it’s been a minute. Sorry about that Drivers. We’ve had a busy week with intakes of new stock… which means fresh tin for you!

We’re back, and with one helluva car. Listing soon is this 370z… Supercharged. E85. Manual. 500hp ATW. Modplated. For some reason, people keep asking us what type of Porsche it is - which is a pretty bloody good compliment!
