Ever heard of an OBD port lock?
This tiny gadget could make a big difference when it comes to protecting your car.
An OBD (on-board diagnostic) port lock helps prevent unauthorised access to your vehicle’s OBD port - the same port offenders are now targeting to mimic keys and steal cars.
In recent weeks, Operation Trinity arrested three youth offenders who had stolen a Toyota parked at a gym. When police caught up with the trio, they threw a key reprogramming device from the car window.
This type of offending is on the rise with 1 in 5 cars being stolen using this method. A car driven through Northland Shopping Centre was allegedly stolen using this technology.
While an OBD is a simple way to block access and keep your car safe, there a few more ways to protect your vehicle:
🔐 Always lock your vehicle, even at home.
🔐 Park off-street where possible.
🔐 Remove garage remotes and spare keys from the vehicle.
🔐 Consider extra anti-theft devices (there are alternatives to OBDs).
🔐 Keep valuables out of sight - or better yet, out of the car entirely.
If your car is stolen, don’t confront the offender - your safety comes first.
Report it to police on 131 444 or online at: police.vic.gov.au/police-assistance-line
If it’s happening now, always call Triple Zero (000).
