😅 Just over 4 weeks until we set off for SubiNats… and we’ve pulled the engine out of Hatchie.

Yep. Perth WA ➡️ Sydney NSW is getting VERY close… so naturally, we decided now was the perfect time to pull the engine. 🤣

Are we doing something really silly… or really awesome?

We’ll decide that when we get there. 😂

Don’t worry though… we work fast. There’s a pretty good chance Hatchie will already be running again by the time you read this post. 🤣

Either way, we’ll have some updates very soon.

📦 BIG BUILD ORDERS… WE LOVE ’E 🔧

When a big order rolls through the Subarino Auto online store, it usually means one thing — someone’s pride and joy is about to get a serious birthday. 😎

We see some pretty impressive build orders come through, and this one definitely ticked a few boxes:

There’s definitely some shed time ahead for this customer. 😂🔧

And the coolest part? This box of old Subaru goodness is heading over 4,000 km away by road. It still blows us away just how far some of our parcels travel from our little workshop here in WA.

Just 2 weeks after getting an EJ22 conversion, this Brumby was back in the workshop for round two…

This time — 5-stud brake upgrade!

Using a combination of donor parts — Liberty brakes and Forester front suspension components — our 5-stud conversion kit was the glue that brought it all together.

To finish it off, we went with a set of zero-offset D-hole Dynamic rims, freshly powder coated in white. 👌 They’ve completely changed the look of the car and really make it stand out.

Sitting even better now thanks to the Subarino 2-inch lift kit and radius rod spacers, this Brumby has the perfect stance and clearance to match its new setup — a true poster boy for the Subarino Workshop.

We get asked about tyres on our builds a lot, so we’ll answer that one now:

🔧 BRUMBY CV BOOTS — WHY DO THEY FAIL?

CV boot failures are extremely common on Brumbys. Here are the causes we see, most common first.

1️⃣ POOR BOOT DESIGN
Most new CV shafts now come with triangular-shaped inner boots. The rib peaks rub together underneath where you can’t see them, eventually wearing through. We’ve seen failures within 200km!

✅ Fit flexible stretch boots with smaller ribs. We fit them to ALL new inner CVs before installation.

2️⃣ TOO MUCH RIDE HEIGHT
Raised springs, poor lift geometry or genuine adjustable struts wound right up create excessive CV angles.

📏 Measure hub centre → wheel arch:
• Standard: ~360mm
• 2” body lift: ~410mm

Yellow King Springs are a common culprit as they’re actually a Hyundai application.

✅ Correct the ride height. Wind adjustable struts down. For Yellow Kings, removing exactly one coil works well.

3️⃣ WORN MOUNTS
Worn engine/gearbox mounts or pitch rod bushes allow drivetrain movement, changing CV angles or causing the boot to contact other components.
✅ Check and replace worn mounts.

4️⃣ STEERING COLUMN
Rare, but we’ve seen it! A missing/damaged firewall rubber can allow the steering shaft to contact the driver’s CV boot. Even leaning on the steering wheel can move it enough.

✅ Check the firewall mount and look for rub marks.

5️⃣ BRAKE FLUID
A spill or leaking master cylinder can perish a CV boot VERY quickly.

✅ Repair the leak and clean any contamination.

6️⃣ DRIVELINE CONVERSIONS
A gearbox mounted too high creates excessive CV angles just like raised suspension.

✅ Check your CV angles at normal ride height.

💡 NEED TO REDUCE CV ANGLES?
Our 10mm engine crossmember spacers lower the engine/driveline 10mm, reducing CV angles and helping camber on raised Brumbys.

🔧 Keeping Old-School Subarus Alive

For us, keeping these old Subarus on the road isn’t just about finding parts. It’s about identifying the common faults and working out a reliable solution.

One of the most common issues we see on Subaru Brumbys is leaking brake master cylinders.

Rebuilding these properly requires special tooling and a rebuild kit that’s becoming increasingly difficult to source. And because we’re talking about a critical brake component, we don’t recommend attempting the rebuild yourself. One mistake here can result in serious brake failure.

That’s why we offer our Brumby Brake Master Cylinder Exchange Service.
These aren’t simply given a quick seal kit and sent back out.

Each unit is:
🔹 Completely dismantled�🔹 Acid bathed and cleaned�🔹 Thoroughly inspected�🔹 Reassembled with all-new internal components�🔹 Fitted with new internal return springs

The rebuilding is carried out by a professional brake service team, not in-house.
To keep turnaround times as short as possible, we now have 10 master cylinders in our exchange rotation, ready to go.

♻️ STRICTLY EXCHANGE
Send us the master cylinder from your Brumby — or another spare Brumby cylinder if you have one. We don’t care which one, as long as we receive a suitable unit to put back into the rebuild rotation.

📦 Express return postage is included, so turnaround time is basically only limited by how quickly you can get your exchange unit to us.

And master cylinders aren’t the only common Brumby problem we’ve tackled this way.

🌙 Late-night Brumby clutch cable rescue!

This lucky Brumby owner had noticed the early signs of a stiff clutch cable for a few weeks, so he purchased a spare Subarino clutch cable and threw it in the back—“just in case.”

Well… tonight was the night! 😅

A late-night roadside replacement had him back on the road, and he’s more than rapt with his smooth, soft clutch pedal.

Interesting fact: A clutch cable that has broken down internally will often bind only when it’s under load. This means it can feel perfectly smooth when operated by hand while disconnected, but become extremely hard to press once fitted and working the clutch.

A spare cable in the back could save you a long walk home!

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time we’ve had to supply a set of reconditioned Subaru Brumby rear trailing arms.

This customer had little faith that his local workshop had the correct tooling, so rather than risk damaging his originals, we supplied a reconditioned pair of trailing arms complete with brand-new rear wheel bearings, ready to bolt straight in.

The difference? We fit every set using our own Subarino Rear Wheel Bearing Sprocket Tool, designed specifically to remove and install the bearing retaining socket without damaging these increasingly hard-to-find trailing arms.

For anyone wondering, our grease of choice for Subaru rear wheel bearings is Penrite NLGI 2 High Temperature Wheel Bearing Grease. It’s what we use in-house on every build.

How fast can you do an EJ conversion into a Brumby?

We get asked this all the time—and the honest answer is, it depends!

There are plenty of factors that can affect the time involved, including the condition of the vehicle, the donor parts, previous modifications and exactly what’s included in the job. That makes every conversion different and very difficult to quote purely by labour hours.

But this one we just finished clocked up only 19 man-hours! 💪

It drove into the Subarino workshop on Monday morning and was back on the road in time for the Wednesday lunch run—now powered by an EJ22.

And yes, before you ask… they were air horns. 📣😂

This is also the second EJ conversion we’ve completed this month, so it’s certainly been a busy one in the workshop!

Not every conversion will come together this quickly, but when everything plays nicely, it’s amazing what can be achieved.
