🔧 WHAT’S UNDER HATCHIE’S BONNET? 🔧

Didn’t get a chance to peek under Hatchie’s bonnet at SubiNats 2026?

Well, there’s a reason we didn’t have it on display! 🤣

It’s certainly not our prettiest work under there. In fact, it’s absolutely jam-packed! But that’s because everything under Hatchie’s bonnet has a purpose. This little Subaru was built for adventure, not to win trophies for the cleanest engine bay.

💪 EJ251 2.5L supplying the grunt to get us wherever we want to go.

🌪️ Factory enclosed Outback airbox, fed directly from the snorkel to keep the dust and water out.

💨 Centrally mounted ARB air compressor, ready for airing those tyres back up after a day on the beach.

🔋 Large-capacity battery, helping keep the fridge in the boot running on those big adventures.

🌡️ Oversized coolant expansion tank, keeping things under control when the going gets tough.

⚡ Winch controller, connected to our cleverly concealed winch hiding behind the front number plate.

There’s not much spare room under there, and it’s certainly not going to win any engine bay beauty contests.

But after crossing the Nullarbor twice in just over two weeks, we’d say the setup has well and truly proven itself!

Hatchie isn’t built to look pretty with the bonnet up. It’s built to take us places. 💪

🏁 SUBINATS 2026 – WE MADE IT HOME! 🏁

Well, that’s a wrap! 🍻

What better way to celebrate than dropping past Coffee Mike’s place for a well-earned drink after Hatchie’s absolutely monumental effort!

Across the Nullarbor… not once, but TWICE in just over two weeks, all in the name of SubiNats 2026!

The final push home was something else. Three massive days behind the wheel took us from west of Adelaide all the way back to Perth. Plenty of kilometres, countless litres of fuel, and that unmistakable soundtrack of mud terrain tyres humming away.

And Hatchie? ABSOLUTE WEAPON! 💪

43 years old, heavily modified, and still happily smashing out the kilometres like it was built for this sort of punishment.

What an epic adventure. What an incredible Subaru. And what a fantastic reminder of why we do what we do here at Subarino Auto.

Now it’s time to give Hatchie some well-deserved TLC, catch up on a mountain of work, and perhaps start dreaming up the next ridiculous adventure. 😅

🚙 SMALL TRUCK, BIG PERSONALITY! 💙

Did you spot this awesome little Subaru Sambar at SubiNats 2026?

It might have been one of the smallest Subarus at the event, but it was definitely one of our favourites!

We see hundreds of old Subarus in our travels, but these little beauties are something we rarely come across. And every time we see one, it gets us thinking…

How cool would one of these be as a Subarino mini work truck?! 😍

Unfortunately, there’s a slight problem with that plan.

You see, my better half has a very strict two-car policy. Apparently, I’m only allowed to have two toys at any given time. 🤣

And with Hatchie and a rather tricked-out Brumby already occupying the stable, there’s not exactly much room for negotiation.

I’ve tried explaining that a Sambar is so small it should really only count as half a car… but I’m not sure that argument is going to fly. 😂

Happy wife, happy life, they say!

For now, I’ll just have to admire them from a distance. But if one happens to follow me home someday… well, that’s a problem for future me! 🤣

Who else reckons Subarino needs a little Sambar work truck? 👀

🚙💨 IT’S A SMALL WORLD… EVEN IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!

Somewhere in the middle of the Nullarbor, Hatchie was happily eating up the kilometres, flying past caravans and slower-moving vehicles. At the speed limit, of course! 😇

Then my phone goes off. A text message from a Subarino customer.

“You just overtook me and my mate in our Splitty VW Kombis!” 😂

What are the chances?!

Turns out these guys had the same idea as us. Take their old classics on an epic road trip across Australia! They had no idea about SubiNats or that Hatchie would be making the journey.

Even better, after seeing what Hatchie was capable of out on the open highway, our customer reckons he’s now inspired to get stuck back into his Brumby EJ conversion. A project that’s been sitting on the back burner for quite some time!

Naturally, we couldn’t resist pulling over for a roadside catch-up and a photo opportunity. Three old classics, thousands of kilometres from home, all out doing exactly what they were built for. ❤️

Coffee Mike would have absolutely loved this encounter. He’s got an old Kombi tucked away himself! Unfortunately, he’d already flown home, so he missed out on this one. ☕😂

Just goes to show, no matter how far you travel, it’s always a small world when you’re into old cars.

🚙 SUBINATS 2026 – THE JOURNEY HOME

Apparently, I Need Adult Supervision! 🤣

Well, yesterday was an absolute monster!

Penong, South Australia, to Norseman, Western Australia. Around 1,150 km and over 13 hours on the road, including stops, in a 43-year-old Subaru!

With Coffee Mike having flown home from Sydney, I’ve been left with ChatGPT as my new co-pilot and apparently my voice of reason.

Unfortunately, my digital companion doesn’t share my confidence in either myself or Hatchie. 🤣

While I’m planning how many kilometres I can knock over, ChatGPT keeps suggesting ridiculous things like “rest days”, “taking it easy” and questioning the wisdom of pushing a 43-year-old Subaru across the Nullarbor.

Clearly, it doesn’t understand the level of Subarino wizardry going on behind the wheel!

I’ve got my finely calibrated bum-on-seat sensor, an ear perfectly tuned to the slightest abnormal engine noise, and surgeon-like hands detecting even the tiniest steering irregularity.

I know this car like the back of my hand. Every vibration, every noise and every little personality trait. If something isn’t right, I’ll know about it.

And yesterday? Hatchie didn’t miss a bloody beat!

To be fair, ChatGPT has been incredibly useful throughout this adventure. But I think we need to have a serious discussion about its lack of faith in old Subarus. 🤣

We’re now well and truly back in Western Australia, and home is getting closer!

Today should be an easy one.

Although I suspect ChatGPT will have something to say about that too! 😂

⛽ HATCHIE’S SECRET 72L FUEL TANK!

Back in 2021, we decided Hatchie needed a serious fuel tank upgrade!

The problem was simple. With the original 45L fuel tank, we just didn’t have the range to go on some of the adventures we had planned.

So naturally, we decided to make the tank bigger. MUCH bigger! 😎

The result? A whopping 72L fuel tank! That’s a 60% increase in capacity!

And the best part? We didn’t sacrifice any ground clearance, and from underneath the car, you’d hardly know anything had changed!

So how did we do it?

We started with the larger capacity Subaru Brumby fuel tank, spaced it down and welded an additional section from a second tank onto the top.

The result is a completely factory-looking tank with considerably more capacity.

There is one funny little quirk though. The fuel gauge generally stays on FULL for the first 200+km before it starts dropping and reading normally. 😂

⛽ SO HOW DOES IT PERFORM?

Well, our SubiNats 2026 trip has given us the perfect opportunity to put it to the test!

Based on our fuel records crossing Australia, Hatchie has been averaging approximately 11.3L/100km.

That gives us a theoretical range of around 640km per tank!

Compared to approximately 400km with the original tank, that’s an extra 240km of freedom between fuel stops!

And when you’re travelling across the Nullarbor, that extra range is worth its weight in gold!

Just another one of the many modifications we’ve made to Hatchie over the years to turn this little old Subaru into a proper touring machine.

🚙 SUBINATS 2026 – THE LONELY ROAD HOME

Just me… Hatchie… some good tunes… and the endless Australian outback.

Flying across the Nullarbor in a not-so-smooth 43-year-old Subaru. The constant drone of the Mud Terrain tyres providing the soundtrack, along with a complimentary gentle massage through the seats. 😂

No co-pilot, no conversations, nobody to complain about my choice of music… and nobody asking when we’re stopping for the next coffee. ☕😂

It’s noisy, it’s bumpy, it’s far from comfortable… but there’s something strangely peaceful about being out here on my own.

Just an old Subaru, the open road, and a few thousand kilometres to myself.

Absolute bliss. 😎

🚙 SUBINATS 2026 – THE JOURNEY HOME 🇦🇺

It’s funny the things you notice depending on which direction you’re travelling!

I have absolutely no idea how we missed this sign on the way over, but heading west today, I couldn’t resist pulling Hatchie over for a photo opportunity. 📸

Apparently, this is halfway across Australia… so surely that means we’re halfway home, right? 😂

It certainly doesn’t feel like it! Especially knowing I’ve still got the mighty Nullarbor ahead of me and a whole lot of kilometres to knock over before Hatchie sees the driveway again.

But we’re making good progress, Hatchie hasn’t missed a beat, and every kilometre is another kilometre closer to home.

Perth, we’re coming for ya! 🇦🇺

One last bit of Subarino business before we head hard west for home!

This was a stop we’d had planned in our itinerary for a long time, and one we certainly weren’t going to miss!

Catching up with Mitch from Parts By Geci!

Mitch has been a huge supporter of Subarino Auto for years. It all started with him being a loyal customer, purchasing a Brumby lift kit and EJ conversion parts for his own awesome rig.

Fast forward a few years, and Mitch now plays a pretty important role behind the scenes at Subarino!

He’s the talented bloke responsible for designing and manufacturing all the 3D printed parts you’ll find in our online shop.

His design skills are incredible, his attention to detail is second to none, and he’s hands down the best 3D printing specialist we’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.

It was absolutely fantastic to finally catch up in person, have a few long chats about where both our businesses are heading, and throw around some ideas for the future.

And let’s just say… we cooked up some pretty cool stuff that’s coming soon! 👀

But here’s what we love most about Mitch.

He’s not just doing this to make and sell parts. He’s doing it for exactly the same reason we started Subarino all those years ago.

Because old Subarus are worth keeping on the road.

It’s pretty special working alongside someone who shares that same passion, and we’re bloody grateful to have him as part of the Subarino story.

Thanks for everything, Mitch. Looking forward to what we can achieve together in the years ahead!

🔥 POSSIBLY A WORLD FIRST?! 🔥

Did you spot this awesome rig at SubiNats 2026?

Built by the legends at Settlement Creek Racing, the same crew behind that monstrous gold off-road racing Brumby that was also on display!

But what you might not have realised is just how significant this build could be…

Under the bonnet sits a Subaru Boxer Diesel engine! 😲

This is believed to be the first diesel-powered Subaru Brumby in the world! 🌏 And if it’s not a world first, we’re pretty confident it’s an Australian first!

How bloody cool is that?!

With those massive tyres, wild bodywork and a diesel Boxer under the bonnet, this thing is already looking absolutely wicked!

It’s still a work in progress, and we can’t wait to see how it turns out once it’s finished.

Massive credit to the Settlement Creek Racing crew for continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible with these old Subarus. 👏
