Every year on 28 July, World Nature Conservation Day reminds us that protecting nature isn’t just about saving wildlife ...
It’s about protecting the ecosystems that sustain us all.
Here on the Sunshine Coast, we are incredibly fortunate to have one of Australia’s most significant coastal environments right on our doorstep.
🌊 The Pumicestone Passage.
This remarkable estuarine system supports an extraordinary diversity of life and provides benefits that extend far beyond its shoreline.
Why does the Pumicestone Passage matter?
🦀 It provides critical habitat for fish, crabs and prawns that support healthy fisheries.
🦆 It is internationally recognised through the Moreton Bay Ramsar Wetland, providing feeding and roosting habitat for migratory shorebirds that travel thousands of kilometres along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway.
🌱 Mangroves, saltmarshes and seagrass meadows protect our coastline, filter pollutants, stabilise sediments and store significant amounts of blue carbon.
🐬 It supports dolphins, turtles, dugongs and countless marine species that rely on healthy coastal ecosystems.
💧 The Passage also improves water quality by naturally filtering runoff before it reaches Moreton Bay.
These ecological values don’t happen by accident.
They depend on thoughtful planning, evidence-based management, community stewardship and protecting the natural systems that keep the Passage healthy.
Today, on World Nature Conservation Day, we invite everyone to take a moment to appreciate what makes the Pumicestone Passage so special—and why it deserves our care.
