30ft Bavaria with twin Volvo’s in the workshop for some maintenance work 🔧

Replaced the shift cable hose after it was found rubbing on the back of the engine. New trim senders were also fitted to ensure accurate readings. Sea-trialed to ensure we problem free boating 👌🏻

Pulled out safely with our workshop trailer, rated to haul boats up to 33ft 🚤

Out on-site attending to this 38ft Bavaria with a crank no-start issue on the Volvo Penta 5.7L ⚓️

After diagnosis, we found the seawater pump had seized, putting excessive strain on the system and bending the mounting bracket. Another good reminder why routine servicing and inspections are so important on these engines.

Australia wide pre-purchase inspections available 🇦🇺⚓️

Today we travelled to Scarborough Marina in Brisbane to carry out a detailed mechanical inspection on this Mustang 3800, providing the purchaser with a full defect report categorised into HIGH, MEDIUM and LOW risk items.

No matter the age of the boat or when it was last serviced, we always recommend inspections prior to purchase. Part of our process includes hauling the vessel to inspect sterndrives, props and gear oils, as underwater damage and corrosion can occur at any time.

This re-powered Mustang actually presented reasonably well mechanically overall, however we still identified a number of defects including blocked sterndrive water pickups from shell buildup, coolant leaks around the hot water system, moisture concerns in sections of the bilge/transom area, and various electrical items requiring attention. Oil samples were also taken and sent to Caterpillar for analysis at the buyer’s request.

It’s very rare we inspect a completely “turn key” boat with nothing to report — inspections are designed to uncover issues before they become someone else’s expensive problem.

These Cat 3126 oil coolers were heavily blocked with old anodes, seaweed and debris, restricting water flow and reducing cooling efficiency. Left unchecked, blocked coolers can cause overheating and major engine damage.

These coolers required a full acid bath clean to restore proper flow and cooling performance, along with a fresh coat of paint to have them looking good as new again. Regular servicing and maintenance are critical to prevent costly failures and keep your engines running reliably.

This 28ft Mustang is now up on our workshop trailer after a major overheat caused by a failed raw water impeller — reportedly last replaced around 6 years ago. This is exactly why annual servicing is critical, regardless of how often the boat is used. Impellers, cooling systems, manifolds and key service items deteriorate over time, not just hours. Unfortunately, what may have started as a simple impeller replacement could now snowball into much bigger issues including cracked heads, manifold damage and major engine repairs. Regular 12-month servicing is cheap insurance compared to catastrophic failures like this. Don’t wait until it overheats — preventative maintenance keeps you on the water and protects your investment.

Customer brought this boat from interstate — RIV 4000 with twin CAT 3126 — after a survey done by another mechanic.

We’ve been working through the issues that were missed:

- Replaced seawater pumps
- New air + crankcase filters
- Replaced perished high-pressure HEUI oil feed lines
- Full oil & filter service

…and the list keeps going.
