Big decisions are being made right now about the future of community sport infrastructure on the Gold Coast, and I don't think enough people know about it yet.
Council has proposed reducing baseball provision at a key site to just one enclosed field and one open multi-purpose field, to be shared across multiple sports due to bringing another sport Netball to the space. On the surface that might sound like an efficient use of space. In practice, it raises a serious question: when multiple sports need that field at the same time, who gets priority, and where does everyone else go?
Some context that's worth putting on the public record. Surfers Paradise Baseball Club is one of the premier clubs in Queensland and nationally, with a genuine focus on player development, high performance, and hosting large-scale events. It's the central hub for baseball on the Gold Coast and operates year-round. Right now, because Runaway Bay's fields are unplayable, their senior club is using Surfers as its home ground as well. When weather makes other Gold Coast baseball fields unplayable, those games get moved to Surfers too. Both fields are in near-constant use, especially on weekends.
Beyond the club itself, this site plays a real role in the Gold Coast's visitor economy. Surfers Paradise Baseball Club draws thousands of players, families, and officials from across the country and around the world every year, who travel here to compete and spend time in the city. That's visitation, accommodation, hospitality, and tourism spend that flows directly from having quality baseball infrastructure in place.
If this proposal goes ahead as it stands, SPBC stands to lose at least half its membership and won't be able to run most of its programs, trom juniors through to masters, male and temale, simply because the club won't have the space to host them.
That's not just a loss for the club. It's a loss for the city's sporting tourism footprint too.
