Southern Dent and Shine

Southern Dent and Shine Trade qualified with 30 years experience, 10 years+ as owner/tradesman at Southern Dent and Shine Then, at 20 years old now, the rot REALLY sets in.

We exist to provide the restoration services that other shops no longer want to deal with. Rust removal and resectioning of whole pieces is rapidly becoming a lost aspect of the trade. The vehicles we work on are now around the 50 year old mark and older. Fact is that every single one of them is no longer all factory original. They were purchased brand new, loved, insured, pranged and repaired un

der that insurance. Then they were sold second hand, not insured again, a few rust spots appeared and that was quickly fibreglassed over to make it look nice again. The hack work to keep them together up top gets more extensive. Layers and layers of fibreglass, bog and paint hide the reality of a panel that's no longer fit for the job. And the inners they bolt onto are going now too....
That's where Southern Dent and Shine comes in. ANYTHING can be replaced with the skills and equipment, time and of course, money. We will work with you to keep the dream alive. All is not lost for your dream car as long as Southern Dent and Shine exists ✨️

This poor old girl came to us in a fair bit of disarray for her 45 odd years. Long abandoned repairs sitting under failing old primers and guide coats , dry, dull and flaking old respray coatings dragging everything down, and rust busting out in most of the usual suspects. A rust free boot and badly dented replacement bonnet were her best bits lol.
A simple enough sounding brief; make her presentable, and all the one colour (Corinthian Blue) again.
With pretty tight bugetary constraints foremost in mind, we've used a combination of rust replacement sections to replace some of the worst rust, and some 'creative stabilisation' work to the rest to get her in a far better state to be an enjoyable drive again πŸ™‚
And that's the whole point of it all πŸ‘Œ

πŸ‘΅πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί This reeeeal old Aussie 1957 Holden Special station wagon came to us after a couple of false starts elsewhere. Understandable that the last guy noped right outta there after very bravely cutting open the right hand sill cover, she was in a right state!
This old bus needed MAJOR lower structural repair, with underfloor cross members, floor pans, mid and front lower pillars, inner and outer sills and front corners all slowly being lost to rust. Inside, outside...down low everything was going or gone πŸ€”
All works have been completed using a combination of rust repair sections obtained through the usual suspects, supplemented with some very nice front lower corner assemblys by Stark Automotive (available from Rare Spares). With the odd hand fabricated section to fill in the blanks, reckon up to 3 dozen pieces have gone together to make these floors structurally sound again. Scroll through pics and you'll see how rough she had become just through time 🫣
Now it's a project, not a nightmare, with enough of the hard stuff done for the customer to have a hand in it's completion and actually maybe have some fun doing it lol πŸ˜€

Always nice to have visitors at Southern Dent and Shine! Today was the big final reveal of this lil Stag we repaired and resprayed about 2 years ago, before refitting all bolt on parts to latch up for gaps, then returning to the customer for complete fit out. See final 2 pics for how we delivered her compared to now she's all dressed up!πŸ‘Œ
Looks awesome. Owner Mal has done a great job with alot of heavy chrome to bolt on, door glass, and a complex interior to deal with, all of it RIGHT up next to fresh fresh paint. Hats off, that can be truly scary stuff, even for us lol πŸ˜†
Thanks for bringing her down for a look see Mal, always love seeing them being driven about looking fabulous ✨️😎

Last replacement panel down for the year at Southern Dent and Shine! A lovely new plenum chamber/dash section for the ol HJ ute we've had in for major rust replacement works.
Started out as always, seeing if we could pick about and get away with just the corners being replaced, but nope. We all know what these things look like now, so off it came in it's entirety. An excellent replacement piece helped massively, dropping straight down neatly following a full clean up and recoatings to the inner chamber section. Suspect a genuine part made it's way to Rare Spares it was THAT good... πŸ€” πŸ‘
Looks awesome now in primer,, and was the only way to go for longevity.
2023 was a massive year for Southern Dent and Shine, with 30 panels from 3 different vehicles and a whole VL Commodore repaired just over the winter months, it's been hectic.
So stay tuned in 2024, got plenty of pics stored up for some great posts to come of these grouse old buses! πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘Œ
Happy 2024 everyone and thanks to all our supporters!

⚑️The future popped in to Southern Dent and Shine to say hi today! πŸ‘‹ ⚑️
Our good customer and friend Shaun McPherson popped down to the valley with the family today, in this very fine looking machine, the 2023 Tesla model 3.

Shaun is lead tech for the fledgling Tesla sales and service team that has been established in Hobart quite recently. So we were pretty excited to hear that he'd be coming down to check on his preoject in the customer service loaner car this weekend!

Pretty damn spot on panel and paint, great to walk up on. Crisp body lines, good gaps, nice not-too-peely paint finish, and in a fairly uncomplicated dark charcoal silver shot through with a gorgeous blue violet suspended metallic flake that picks right up in the sun πŸ‘ŒNo stoopid add on flourishes, trims, bezels or covers that push repair costs up unnecessarily, and, best of all...completely flat underside. If you've ever had to fix a rusted floor you just know this is a good thing lol.

All in all, for around $70k and to get the f*** away from dependence on fuel...hell I'd buy one lol πŸ‘Œ

First of the πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί Commys to come to us for works! Kinda been expecting one for a bit now haha πŸ˜‰
We completed all the general panel beating works this VB Commodore required recently, before she goes elsewhere for completion.
For this one we've fitted a couple of pre fabricated rust replacement sections to the plenum chamber and spare wheel well, zipped up a few rust holes round the windscreen apertures, then finished up with metal finished dent repairs round the car before popping works into primer.
All in all, not too many surprises to be found on this one given the age of these buses!
As usual, all works completed by qualified tradesman Ian Mattice, in Geeveston πŸ‘

100% LEGIT, for real and AWESOME OPPORTUNITY on offer!
Anyone keen on a career in the future electric auto industry, this will pair you with both top of the industry training AND with one of the nicest blokes you'll meet, Shaun McPherson. Yes, Tesla technicians will now be based in Hobart, this is absolutely no scam or we wouldn't be sharing lol
Sorry no direct link that's shareable, but the job reference number is right there. And I'm sure Shaun wouldn't mind a DM regarding πŸ˜‰

LC Torana floor pan and boot section replacement.
Don't have a whole lot of before pics of the floor in the state it was in when we received it, suffice to say it needed 4 floor pans and 3 sections in the boot to make it all stable again! Full of rust and holes ending up in sad piles of crap and dust on the workshop floor lol.
Major benefit is being able to inspect, clean up and re coat the inner chassis rails when the floors are up, and pre coat the undersides of new sections before they go in.
These are all Rare Spares sections, and as expected, all of them had the ol 'some fitment required' caveat attached haha. They're a better start than flat steel though, so no argument here πŸ˜‰

LC Torana fixed plenum chamber rust repair⚑️🧟😬
If you know, you know haha.
These are just plain difficult, and nobody is fabricating them as a full repair sections, only the endy corner bits were able to be replaced. Just getting the thing off nice, clean and in one piece was only the first battle in a fairly protracted conflict lol
Welding so near the hundred odd vent fins was just plain scary too, but it all panned out in the finish πŸ‘Œ

πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί THE LIL LC/LJ THAT COULD. (Eventually.)
This saga started quite a whiles ago now, so not alot of before shots this post sorry guys. Look way, way down our page, she's lurking down there. 🧐
Suffice to say, this lil old girl was beat. She was beat BAD. She'd been pinballed off every tree in the paddock, been up and down every ditch, rusted away for a decade in that paddock, eventually dragged out, had half her bum cut off, 'stripped', 'primed', then passed to our customer.

A man who had Big Plans for her, despite her obvious disfigurement.
Mission accepted 😎 (coz we're mental and enjoy punishment in our work lol)

I'm just gonna list it all, starting with replaced rust sections and other fixed parts.
Right rear quarter/tail light/beaver panel cut away refit.
Flute to right hand guard.
Fit left front aftermarket fluted, fixed guard.
4x floor pans.
2x boot floor sections.
Spare wheel well.
Lower beaver panel.
Right lower front quarter to door section.
Fixed front chamber ends, full chamber removal.
Left front pillar in and out.
Right front pillar in and out.
Steering column retainer.
Fixed, seized left door hinge pin and collar replace.
Fixed, seized right door hinge pin/collar replace.
Fit chrome moulding pins both doors and quarters.

And general repairs to restore flat panels, shapes and lines;
Right quarter.
Left quarter.
Right front guard.
Right side door.
Left side door.
Right and left sill panels.
Fit aftermarket boot spoiler.
All stripped, all repaired, resealed and recoated.

Phew. 😳
Stay tuned for some of the panel beater's Greatest Hits (repairs) on this in upcoming posts. There's some humdingers on this one! πŸ‘Œ

Restoring the restored! This was an absolute humdinger of a rust 'repair' we've had to rectify on this HJ Kingswood ute. This is just one of the many big sections requiring complete replacement following some dodge resto work, done not long enough ago to pass off as 'old school'.
This is the rear cabin wall/window section. It's big, it's structural and required 4 pre fabbed pieces and alot of hand fabrication to consolidate back into the car itself. It MUST be structurally sound. If this had been left in the vehicle in it's previous state and involved in an accident...potental death trap. See right down in pics and you'll see the state it was in and what previous works had gone into nicely cover up all the b***y traps. Lots of expander foam and nightmares lol.
All rectification works shown completed by tradesman Ian Mattice
