PRE-REGO VS POST-REGO GVM UPGRADES: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

It sounds simple: one happens before registration, the other happens after.

But the important difference is how they’re approved.

A pre-rego GVM upgrade is completed before the vehicle is first registered and goes through a federal approval. That means we can complete eligible pre-rego upgrades here in Brisbane even if the vehicle is ultimately heading interstate.

A post-rego GVM upgrade is different. Once the vehicle has been registered, the approval becomes state-based.

For us, that means we can only engineer post-rego GVM upgrades on Queensland-registered vehicles. If your 4WD is already registered in NSW, SA, Tasmania or another state, it needs to go through that state's own engineering process.

This is also worth thinking about if you're buying a new 4WD and planning a bigger build. Depending on the vehicle and kit, going pre-rego can open up options for bigger lifts and tyre sizes that may not be available once the vehicle is registered.

Whether you’re going 6-inch pre-rego on an F-150 or simply need more payload out of your 200 Series, there’s a GVM upgrade to suit different vehicles and different builds.

It’s the wiring you can’t see that can cause the biggest problems.

We’re currently rewiring this 79 Series and found the winch power cable running directly from the battery without an isolator.

A winch draws serious current, which means you’ve got a large cable running through the vehicle permanently live. If that cable gets damaged or is compromised in an accident, it can potentially short directly to the body and create a serious fire risk.

This is also why we prefer looking at a 4WD’s electrical system as a whole rather than continually adding individual accessories and wiring over the years.

If you’ve bought a modified 4WD or had multiple electrical accessories added over time, it’s worth knowing how everything has actually been wired.

This is what happens when multiple workshops work on and wire one 4WD.

It’s not necessarily that anyone’s done a bad job. It’s that every accessory has been added individually with no one thinking about what the finished build needs to look like.

And when something does stop working, it’s going to be a nightmare to diagnose and fix.

A good build isn’t just about choosing the right parts. Someone needs to think about how the whole thing comes together from day one.

Toyota fanboys… why aren’t you buying the Tundra?

On paper, you’d think it would be an easy sell. 4.5T tow capacity and most importantly — it’s a Toyota.

But it hasn’t taken off in Australia the way you might expect.

If you’re looking at a GVM upgrade for a RAM 2500 or Silverado 2500HD, there’s something you might not have come across with previous GVM upgrades.

Once the GVM goes above 4,500kg, the vehicle moves from the NB1 to NB2 category.

If you’ve previously had a GVM upgrade on something like a LandCruiser, this wasn’t something you had to think about. But with the capacities available on these bigger trucks, NB2 comes into the conversation.

It’s something worth understanding when you’re looking at the different GVM options available for your 2500 American truck.

Most people don’t do this before building their 4WD.

Think about how you’ll use the completed build, then work towards that in stages. That way, you’re spending your budget on the upgrades that make the biggest difference today, while avoiding expensive mistakes you’ll have to undo later.
