Wet Roads & Sudden Stops: What Every Brisbane Driver Needs to Know

When wet weather hits South East Queensland, road conditions change in an instant. On wet bitumen, a vehicle's stopping distance can double compared to dry roads.

At 60 km/h in dry conditions, an alert driver needs around 36 metres to recognize a hazard and come to a complete stop. Add rain and road oil, and that stopping distance expands drastically. Loss of traction and following too closely in wet conditions remain primary culprits behind peak-hour nose-to-tail collisions. Weeks of dry-weather oil, fuel residue, and road grime rise to the surface during rain, creating an invisible, slick coating before heavy downpours wash it away.

Four Wet-Weather Safety Habits

Apply the 4-Second Rule: While a 2-second buffer is standard for dry roads, double your following distance to at least 4 seconds in wet conditions to give yourself adequate stopping room.

Separate Braking and Steering: In the wet, demanding too much from your tyres simultaneously can cause sudden loss of grip. Brake early in a straight line before turning, then accelerate gently out of the bend.

Check Your Tyre Tread: Worn tyres severely limit water dispersion, dramatically increasing the risk of aquaplaning over standing water. Ensure your tread depth is well above the minimum standard before wet weather sets in.

Drive to the Conditions: Posted speed limits represent the maximum safe speed for dry, clear conditions—not heavy downpours. Switch headlights to low beam so surrounding traffic can spot you easily through road spray.

Congratulations, Brisbane Lions – THREE‑PEAT CHAMPIONS!

In a brutal seven‑point thriller, the Lions fought back from a 10‑point last‑quarter deficit to beat Fremantle 14.12 (96) to 12.17 (89) and claim a historic third straight premiership.

Charlie Cameron and Logan Morris (3 goals each) led the charge as Brisbane kicked five goals to two in the final term to turn the game on its head at the MCG.
