๐ Driving in the Rain โ Key Tips for New Learner Drivers (Updated)
Wet weather adds pressure, especially at intersections. Hereโs how beginners can stay safe and in control:
1๏ธโฃ Slow Right Down on Approach
As you get within the last 20โ10 metres of the intersection, aim for a speed close to walking pace.
This gives you time to think, see clearly, and make safe decisions.
Rushing into an intersection leads to poor judgment.
2๏ธโฃ Get in the Correct Turning Position
If turning left, donโt drift into space needed for someone turning right.
Set up early so your car is positioned properly before you turn.
3๏ธโฃ Lights On, Eyes Up
In heavy rain, visibility is reduced โ turn your headlights on.
Scan multiple areas:
To the right for traffic
To the front for your steering line
Along the kerb to guide your turn
4๏ธโฃ Watch for E-Bikes, Scooters & Cyclists
There are a lot more electric pedal bikes and scooters on the road now.
They can travel faster than you expect, even faster than cars entering intersections.
They may undercut you on the left, especially in wet conditions when visibility is poor.
5๏ธโฃ Mirrors & Blind Spot Checks (Critical)
When you put your indicator on to turn โ especially left:
Check your rear-view mirror
Check your left side mirror
Do a blind spot check over your left shoulder
This is especially important if there is a bike lane beside you
๐ Donโt assume youโve seen everything โ e-bikes can appear quickly.
6๏ธโฃ Gentle Steering + Gentle Acceleration
Donโt be heavy on the accelerator while the wheel is still turned.
First:
Control and straighten your steering
Make sure youโre entering the correct lane
Then:
Gently increase acceleration
7๏ธโฃ Make Safety the Priority
Only go when it is completely safe.
Wet roads mean:
Less grip
Longer stopping distances
Slower reactions needed
8๏ธโฃ Wet Weather = Valuable Experience
Driving in the rain (when safe) is great experience for learners.
But if conditions are extreme, itโs okay to wait it out.
Simple learner takeaway:
Slow down. Set up early. Look everywhere. Check mirrors & blind spots. Steer first โ then accelerate gently.
