40 YEARS UNION STRONG 💪

After around 40 years as a proud AMWU member and 22 years as a Union Delegate, Greg Aurisch has officially hung up the boots and retired after a lifetime working across WA’s rail industry.

Greg’s union story is one we’re incredibly proud of.

During his time at EDI Rail in Forrestfield, Greg helped grow the AMWU from just one member — himself — to 100% union membership at the workplace. ✊

Through strong workplace organising and collective action, Greg and his workmates secured positive agreement outcomes and better working conditions. He also represented members through state and national rail committees, bringing ideas and experience back to strengthen his workplace.

Greg finished his working career at Gemco Rail, retiring on 28 August 2026 after eight years with the company.

Reflecting on his time as a member and delegate, Greg thanked the AMWU for standing alongside him and his workmates throughout his career.

While he might be retiring from the workforce, Greg won’t be leaving the union movement behind and plans to stay involved with our retired members.

Congratulations on your retirement, Greg, and thank you for your incredible contribution to the AMWU and generations of rail workers.

Once union, always union. ❤️✊

✊ UGL BP REFINERY WORKERS TAKE ACTION ✊

AMWU, CFMEU WA and ETU WA Branch members, have taken protected industrial action at the BP Refinery.

This action was not taken lightly. It follows prolonged bargaining and the failure of UGL to put forward an offer that properly respects the contribution of its workforce.

Our members have proposed a reasonable pathway to settlement. They are seeking modest increases and sensible protections that provide security for workers and certainty for the company.

We do not believe the parties are far apart—but UGL must return to the bargaining table with a realistic offer.

Our members are united, determined and prepared to stand together for a fair agreement. They will not be pressured into accepting less than they deserve.

The solution is at the bargaining table. It is time for UGL to listen to its workforce and get this agreement done.

Huge congratulations to the AMWU-sponsored basketball team, Argonista, on making it all the way to the finals! 🏀👏

Unfortunately, they just missed out on the top spot, but what a fantastic effort from the whole team.

The AMWU is proud to support workers both in the workplace and out in the community. Great work, Argonista! 💪🏀

VOTED DOWN — WORSLEY WORKERS HAVE SPOKEN ✊

AMWU members at South32 Worsley have rejected the company's proposed Enterprise Agreement, with 70% voting NO.

And members have now backed that decision by endorsing a Protected Action Ballot Order (PABO).

With Alcoa set to take over the operation, workers are looking ahead.

They know the wages, conditions and structures contained in Alcoa agreements are significantly better — and they don't want to be left behind when they're all eventually wearing the same company shirt.

Worsley workers aren't asking for special treatment. They want South32 to use this bargaining round to close the gap and protect their wages and conditions heading into the transition.

The message from members is clear: come back to the bargaining table and deliver an agreement that properly protects the workforce now and into the future.

NO VOTE. A strong mandate. And members are ready to stand together for a better deal. ✊

81% YES! ✊ A BIG WIN AT PERTH MINT

Perth Mint workers have overwhelmingly backed their new Enterprise Agreement, with 81% voting YES.

The three-year deal delivers:
• 5%, 4% and 3% wage increases — with some workers receiving up to 10.4% in the first year to address market rates.
• Increased and new allowances.
• Better leave, including 20% annual leave loading and four days compassionate leave.
• Improved shift loadings and eligibility.
• Penalty rates on all hours worked and fairer sharing of overtime.
• A new classification structure with clearer progression.

Even better — union membership doubled during this round of bargaining.

📣 Members, keep an eye on your payslips! The company has advised that back pay will be processed in the first pay run in September.

More members. More power. Better outcomes.

Congratulations to our Perth Mint members and delegates! ✊

Yesterday, workers, representatives from the combined Port Ops unions, and BHP met with the Fair Work Commission.

This was the same day that BHP announced a full-year profit of over $13 billion, up 9%. But their offer fails to address the basic concerns of our members - the very workers who helped deliver that massive profit.

We're meeting again next week with BHP, and in the meantime, we'll be consulting with members on our options - including counter-offers. It's time for a fair offer from BHP!

A HUGE FIRST AGREEMENT WIN AT HARVEY BEEF! 🥩✊

AMWU members at Harvey Beef have secured their first-ever Enterprise Agreement on site — delivering major improvements to wages, penalties, allowances and conditions.

Members will receive overall increases ranging from 9.13% to 14.48%, depending on their classification and roster, as well as a guaranteed 3% wage increase each year over the three-year agreement.

The following were also won in the new agreement:
💰 Shift penalties increased — day shift from 9% to 12%, and day/night shift allowance from 15% to 25%
💰 Standby allowances increased
⏰ Proper overtime penalties introduced
📈 Allowances indexed and made all-purpose
🛠️ Five-hour minimum payment for call-outs
🔥 New boiler allowance
📅 $250 Public Holiday Standby Allowance

For workers who previously had no Enterprise Agreement, these are significant, enforceable improvements that will continue delivering for years to come.

This is what happens when workers organise, stand together and bargain collectively.

Last night, key delegates and officials from the AMWU and ETU WA Branch (Australian Shipbuilding Federation of Unions) came together to discuss the future of the Australian Marine Complex, Defence shipbuilding, and how we can continue supporting each other across the sector and building power in our workplaces.

Working together, sharing ideas and continuing to build solidarity across the sector is critical as the industry continues to grow 💪

AMWU members WIN! ✊

The AMWU has secured an outcome for Sure People employees working at the Sandvik facility in Jandakot, ensuring workers are paid fairly for the work they perform.

After reviewing payslips and comparing the rates paid to Sure People employees with Sandvik employees performing the same work, it identified a significant pay disparity. The issue was raised, and now workers will receive the rates they deserve.

The outcome includes:

✅ Operators
New base rate: $47.57 per hour
Casual rate: $59.46 per hour (including 25% casual loading)
Pay increase of $15.49 per hour – around $588 extra per week (based on a 38-hour week).

✅ Production Assistants (T/A's)
New base rate: $45.11 per hour
Casual rate: $56.39 per hour (including 25% casual loading)
Pay increase of $15.69 per hour – around $596 extra per week (based on a 38-hour week).

Workers will also receive:
✔️ 20% afternoon shift penalties (where applicable, Monday to Friday) calculated on the loaded rate.
✔️ Overtime rates for Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays in line with the Sandvik Enterprise Agreement.

This is a life-changing pay rise for these workers.

Congratulations to all the Sure People members at Sandvik.

Over the weekend, hundreds of members from the combined BHP Port Ops unions - The AMWU, Western Mine Workers Alliance - WMWA partner union the AWU, and the ETU WA Branch downed tools in our fight for a fair EA!

Our members know that our action had a huge impact at Port Hedland - and so does BHP.

We hope this action does exactly what it's intended to do, and sharpen everyone’s mind on finding a solution that works for everyone, fast.

Thank you to every member who stood strong with us last weekend - your action made a big difference in our fight!
