🚛 Some heavy vehicle safety trends are improving. Others need attention.

Australia's 2026 NTARC Major Incident Investigation Report shows a mixed picture for the heavy vehicle industry.

The report found that major incidents involving inattention or distraction fell 32% in 2025 compared with 2024.

However, incidents involving inappropriate speed increased ⬆28.9%, while inadequate following-distance incidents rose ⬆11.7%. These figures are based on NTARC's analysis of major-loss insurance claims involving NTI-insured heavy vehicles. They are not a count of every heavy vehicle crash in Australia.

Multimeters don't tell the whole story.

You can hook up a meter and see a healthy 12.7V at rest, but the real health test happens under load. As commercial vehicle batteries age, internal resistance (IR) creeps up due to plate sulfation and internal wear. When you turn the key on a heavy-duty diesel engine, high internal resistance chokes current flow, causing voltage to plunge and leaving the starter motor starved of the cold cranking amps it needs to fire up. Diesel drama delayed! 😅 It looks like Australia's diesel standard change has been put on the backburner until 30 June 2027. The Aussie Government decided to keep the temporary 60.5°C minimum flash point setting in place, because who doesn't love a good extension? 🤣 This means refiners and importers can breathe a sigh of relief, and transport operators can keep on truckin'... for now.
