Vale – Brian Patrick Grealy

Brian Patrick Grealy passed away peacefully on 18 July at the age of 95. A Life Member of the Dederang Picnic Race Club since 2016, Brian was a valued supporter of the Club, generously supplying a generator for race day and, through Grealy Motors, sponsoring the “It’s a Grealy Great!” race since 2019.

Brian founded Grealy Motors & Towing Service in Wodonga more than 50 years ago, creating a family business that continues across three generations.

The Dederang racing community extends its sincere condolences to the Grealy family. Brian’s friendship, generosity and support will be greatly missed, and we will miss seeing him on race day.

Vale – Peter Graham

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Peter Graham.

Peter was a valued member of the Dederang Picnic Races community for many years. As a Race Club committee member, he generously gave his time and energy to help make the event a success.

Together with Wendy, Peters commitment to the broader Dederang community is sincerely appreciated and will not be forgotten.

On behalf of the Dederang Picnic Races Committee, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Wendy, their family and friends at this difficult time. Peter's involvement, commitment and friendly presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him

📣 CALL OUT – COMMUNITY CATERING OPPORTUNITY | 2027 DEDERANG PICNIC RACES

The Dederang Picnic Race Club is now inviting local community groups to register interest in providing catering for the 2027 Dederang Races 🎉

This is a great opportunity for a group to fundraise for their own activities, with an estimated profit of around $2,500 - $3,000 based on previous years.

✅ What’s typically provided:
Recent catering has included sandwich boxes, nibble boxes, fruit platters and individual packs for marquee guests, umbrella areas, luncheon attendees, jockeys, volunteers and officials.

✅ What’s available to you:
Full use of the Multipurpose Building at the Reserve for preparation and packaging. A cool room located at the marquee for storage and service
Flexibility to put forward your own ideas and approach

👉 Please note:
This is not a formal tender process — it is an opportunity for a local group to support the event while raising funds for their own purposes.

We are open to suggestions and proposals from interested groups.

This recognition belongs to our entire community — the volunteers, sponsors, committee and everyone who turns up year after year to make the Dederang races what they are. It’s a true credit to the effort that goes into delivering a great picnic race day.

Picnic Racing Awards 2026

Still hard to wipe the smile off our faces after a brilliant night celebrating the 2025/26 picnic racing season 🏇

Being named Picnic Race Club of the Year was a huge honour for everyone involved with the Dederang Picnic Racing Club. It reflects the effort that goes in right across the year — from track prep and facilities through to the volunteers, sponsors and community who back the day and make it what it is.

Our 2026 Cup meeting was something special, with a fantastic crowd turning out and plenty happening on and off the track. To be recognised for that — along with the work we’ve been putting into improvements, camping, and building a great day out — means a lot.

What really stood out on the night though was the chance to celebrate alongside so many others across the picnic circuit. From trainers and jockeys to fellow clubs, there’s a lot of good people doing great things in country racing. It was great to see the success of horses like Magnardo and Diamanda, and to acknowledge standout seasons from participants right across Victoria.
A big congratulations as well to Buchan & Gelantipy race club on their Community Club of the Year award — a great example of a club bouncing back and delivering for their community.

The night was a great reminder of what the picnic circuit is all about — strong communities, good racing, and people backing each other in.

We’re proud of what’s been achieved, but we’re just getting started. Bring on Dederang 2027 🍻🔥

With the final episode of Oops I Bought a Pub airing tonight, we thought it was about time we got around to it 👀
Especially given this journey actually kicked off right here at the 2025 Dederang Picnic Races — not a bad starting point for a story about chasing a big country dream!
