Temperature gauge creeping into the red? What you do in the next 60 seconds decides whether this is a cheap fix or a blown head gasket.

It's the one repair people skip because they can't see it — and the one that can write off an engine. Belt or chain: here's what yours needs.

The timing belt or chain keeps the crankshaft and camshaft in sync; lose that timing and, on most modern (interference) engines, the valves and pistons collide. A belt is toothed rubber that must be replaced on a set schedule — by kilometres or years, whichever comes first, because rubber ages even on a low-km car. A chain is metal, runs in oil and usually lasts far longer, but can still wear on stretched oil intervals, often announcing itself with a rattle on cold start-up. Do the water pump and tensioners with the belt to avoid paying the big labour bill twice.

A clutch doesn't fail overnight — it warns you for weeks first. Here's what to feel and listen for.

Slipping is the classic sign: the revs climb but the car doesn't speed up in proportion, worst uphill or in a high gear. Watch too for a bite point creeping higher (a worn clutch) or a soft, sinking pedal (a hydraulic fault); notchy shifts into 1st and reverse where the clutch isn't releasing cleanly; a shudder as you pull away; and a sharp burning smell that means it's slipping and getting hot. On modern diesels and European cars, a worn dual-mass flywheel should be replaced with the clutch — reuse a tired one and the shudder comes back, and you pay the big labour bill twice.

Winter is when the diesel filter light tends to come on — and short trips are almost always why.

Your DPF traps soot from the exhaust, then burns it off in a process called regeneration, which needs a long, hot drive. Lots of short trips never get it hot enough, so it clogs — the single most common DPF problem we see. The signs are a DPF warning light, power loss or limp mode, and poorer fuel economy. Caught early it can usually be cleaned or regenerated; left too long it needs replacing, which is costly.

We diagnose the DPF and the cause — short trips, a faulty sensor or EGR — clean or regenerate where it's viable, and only replace it if it's genuinely beyond saving.

That first squeal when you brake isn't nothing — it's your pads telling you the clock has started.

Brakes almost always warn you before they fail, in a predictable order: squealing means the pads are getting low (the cheap moment to act); grinding is metal on metal, with the backing plate carving grooves into the rotor and turning a pad job into a pad-and-rotor job; a soft or sinking pedal is the one most likely to leave you with no brakes when you need them most; and pulling to one side, a shudder through the pedal or longer stopping distances all mean it's time for a look.
