🏁 The Third Pedal Just Got a Lot More Expensive
The manual transmission has gone from being the standard enthusiast choice to something increasingly rare—and Porsche is putting a serious price on it.

For the 2027 Porsche 911 Carrera S, choosing the six-speed manual means opting for the mandatory MT Package, which adds $8,550 to the Coupe and nearly $11,000 to the Cabriolet.

But you're getting more than just a clutch pedal. The package also brings rear-axle steering, PASM Sport suspension, Sport Chrono, titanium exhaust outlets, and center-lock wheels that save more than 17 lbs. The Carrera S still packs a 473-hp 3.0L twin-turbo flat-six and comes exclusively with rear-wheel drive when equipped with the manual.

And Porsche already knows enthusiasts want it. According to Porsche North America CEO Timo Resch, around 80% of GT3 Touring buyers choose the manual, while more than half of standard GT3 buyers do the same.

So, are we watching the third pedal become a luxury feature? 👀

One thing's for sure: as manual transmissions become harder to find, the experience of rowing your own gears is becoming increasingly valuable.

Revealed at the 2026 Bathurst 1000, the ShowTime Repco-Mod 933 is a one-off restomod that takes a Porsche Type 996 coupe shell and completely rewrites the rulebook.

Under the skin sits a 427ci twin-turbo LSX V8, built by Hi-Torque Performance and boosted by twin Turbosmart TS-2-6466 turbos — producing more than 1,200 hp (895 kW+). 😮‍💨🔥

And it doesn't stop there:

🔥 THE CIVIC TYPE R JUST GOT EVEN BETTER.

The Honda Civic Type R returns for 2027 with a sharper edge—and Honda didn’t just give it a visual refresh.

The latest Type R gets improved engine cooling, increased front-end downforce, revised +R mode tuning, quicker rev-matching, and a more direct brake pedal feel. Basically, Honda found more ways to make an already serious hot hatch even more focused.

But there’s one upgrade that might surprise you… heated front seats. 🔥

Yes, the FL5 finally gets heated buckets, along with upgraded seat perforation, more suede throughout the cabin, darker interior trim, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a redesigned aluminum shift k**b.

Outside, the changes are subtle but functional. A revised front fascia improves airflow, while a deeper front splitter helps keep the front axle planted. Honda is also adding Meteorite Gray Metallic to the color lineup.

And underneath it all? The Type R formula remains the same: turbocharged performance, a 6-speed manual, and front-wheel drive.

Starting at $49,990, the 2027 Civic Type R costs a little more—but Honda is clearly keeping the focus where enthusiasts want it: more performance, more control, and more reasons to keep rowing your own gears. 🏁

A recent study from researchers at Tohoku University’s Institute of Development suggests that driving a manual transmission may stimulate the brain’s prefrontal cortex in ways that automatic driving does not.

The reason? Every shift, clutch input, and decision behind the wheel requires active engagement—working areas associated with attention, memory, and decision-making.

The manual transmission may be disappearing—but not everyone is ready to let it die. 🫡

As automatics continue to dominate the market, several performance brands are still investing in the three-pedal experience that enthusiasts love.

🔥 Porsche is bringing the 6-speed manual back to the 911 Carrera S with its new MT Package.

🔥 McLaren is bringing a manual gearbox back to a production car for the first time since the legendary F1.

🔥 Subaru is doubling down on enthusiast cars, including plans for new manual-equipped models and the return of its heavier-duty TY85 gearbox.

🔥 Toyota continues offering manuals in the GR Corolla, GR Yaris and GR86.

🔥 Honda is keeping the stick alive in the Civic Type R and Integra Type S.

🔥 Ford says the Mustang manual will remain as long as customers continue demanding it.

🔥 BMW continues offering 6-speed manuals in the M2, M3 and M4.

And then there’s another interesting direction: simulated manual transmissions. So maybe the manual isn't dying after all… it's evolving. 👀
