Truth about cutting and polishing and why we as professional detailers always look at alternatives first.

👉 1. POLISHING DOESN’T “FILL” SCRATCHES

A scratch is basically a low point in the surface of your clearcoat.

When you polish the paint, the abrasives remove a tiny amount of clearcoat from the area around the scratch.

This gradually levels the surface until the scratch becomes much less visible.

👉 2. CUTTING REMOVES MORE MATERIAL

The more correction you need, the more aggressively you have to level the clearcoat.

A cutting compound and cutting pad remove material faster so they can tackle heavier swirls and scratches.

But more cutting also means more clearcoat is being removed.

That’s why stronger isn’t automatically better.

👉 3. CUTTING ISN’T FINISHING

After heavy cutting, the big defects might be gone...

But the aggressive pad and compound can leave behind haze, micro-marring and other tiny marks.

Refining uses a finer combination to clean those marks up and bring back the clarity and gloss.

👉 4. SOME SCRATCHES SHOULD STAY

Your clearcoat isn’t unlimited.

Every time you aggressively correct the paint, you’re removing a small amount of it.

If a scratch is too deep, completely removing it could mean sacrificing far more clearcoat than it’s worth.

Sometimes making a scratch 80% better is a much smarter result than chasing perfection.

Cutting and polishing should be left to a professional to give you the best and safest result.
