If youāve been upgrading or maintaining your caravanās electrical system, youāve probably heard the term ālithium compliantā thrown around a lot. So what does it actually mean?
Over the last few years, new safety regulations were introduced to make lithium battery installs safer for everyone. These rules focus on how batteries are housed, ventilated, and protected - especially inside caravans.
Hereās what a compliant lithium setup includes:
ā
A proper battery box
Lithium batteries must be housed in a regulation-approved enclosure. This keeps them sealed off from living areas and protects the van (and people/family) in the unlikely event of a fault.
ā
Correct ventilation
The battery box must be vented to the outside of the van so any gases are safely dispersed - not into your living space.
ā
Secure mounting & access
The lid to the box must be screwed down (canāt just be strapped, must be a screw fixing, so someone canāt bump it open or it canāt come loose), sealed properly, and labelled with the correct safety stickers.
š Why older vans need upgrades
If your caravan was built before the regulation changes, your setup might have been perfectly legal at the time. But hereās the catch:
š As soon as we work on or modify the electrical system, it must be upgraded to meet the current standards. Itās also important to check that the brand of battery you are using is ADR compliant!
Thatās why older vans often need a new battery box or relocation of the batteries when switching to lithium or adding new components (even if it already has lithium).
š Itās all about keeping you safe
These rules arenāt there to complicate things - they ensure your off-grid setup is secure, compliant, and ready for years of safe travel.
If youāre unsure whether your caravan meets the current lithium regulations, feel free to get in touch. I can point you in the right direction.
