A few snap shots of a wet timing belt replacement on a 2.0L Ford Ranger. Unlike traditional rubber timing belts, these are behind the timing cover running in a bath of oil, like how a chain driven engine would be.
They are constructed from special, oil-resistant rubber compounds, often reinforced with aramid fibers and a PTFE coating to handle constant submersion in hot oil.
Manufacturers use this system to reduce friction, reduce noise, and allow for more compact engine design. The down side is pretty self explanatory… This car also had a few other components replaced along the way and is now back in traffic. Have a wet belt?
