The ACT registration system for light vehicles is changing. 🚘

From 1 July 2024, the ACT registration system is changing from a weight-based registration fee to an emissions-based registration fee. It is expected that in 2024-25, 95 per cent of all light vehicles on the road (including petrol and diesel), will be the same or cheaper relative to the weight-based system.

Under an emissions-based registration system:
🚗 low and zero emissions vehicles will have cheaper registration fees
🚙 higher emissions vehicles will pay more for their registration fees.
Changing to an emissions-based registration system is part of Canberra’s plan to make fuel efficient vehicles more affordable for Canberrans, and reach net zero emissions by 2045.

The ACT Government has partnered with The Salvation Army Australia to help disadvantaged learner drivers get their provisional licence 🚗

The learner driver mentor program matches young drivers with volunteer driving mentors to learn the required skills and meet the supervised hours to be eligible to obtain their provisional driver licence ✅

Local car dealership Gulson’s Cars Canberra has assisted by donating a Hyundai hatchback for participant use.

“The donation of this car will enable young people to have a safe, maintained, and insured vehicle in which to practise their driving skills,” said Salvation Army’s Oasis Youth Services Manager, Andrew Rich.

Great news for Canberrans learning to drive! 🚗

From Wednesday 22 November, learner drivers will have an opportunity to learn basic lifesaving first aid skills and claim five hours credit against their required driving hours.

Under the new Learner Driver First Aid Program, learner drivers will be able to complete first aid training designed to assist people if they’re involved in, or come across, a motor vehicle crash.

To be eligible you must have held your learner licence for at least three months and complete one of the approved learner driver first aid courses.

The new learner driver first aid program builds on existing competency training for learner drivers to make sure people have a better understanding of safety on Canberra’s roads.
