⚡ Navigating the EV Charging Shortage: Smart Solutions for New Owners ⚡
The shift to electric vehicles in Australia is moving faster than ever! 📈 Spurred by global fuel security concerns tied to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and a massive surge in local EV adoption, our public networks and supply chains are feeling the pinch.
Equipment shortages mean that getting a dedicated home charging wall-box delivered and installed can sometimes take longer than expected. ⏳
If you are currently buying an EV or waiting on a charger, here is how you can stay ahead of the bottleneck and keep your car moving:
📦 1. Source Your Charger as a Package
When buying your new EV, ask the dealership to bundle the home charging station with the vehicle. Securing the hardware at the point of sale usually prioritises your order, and it often allows you to roll the cost into your vehicle's financing or novated lease.
🔌 2. Don't Forget Your Portable "Granny" Cable
If your wall charger is delayed, don’t panic! Generally speaking (with a few exceptions), new EVs come with a portable charging cable that plugs directly into a standard household power point.
Is it safe? Drawing high continuous loads for 10+ hours can stress older household wiring.
The Strategy: Instead of letting your battery run down to empty, simply use it for short daily top-ups. Topping up what you used that day keeps the load on your home's circuit low and is relatively safe!
⚠️ CRITICAL SAFETY NOTE: Never use cheap extension cords, double adapters, or power boards with your portable charger. They are not built for continuous high-amp draw and can quickly become a serious fire hazard. Always plug your portable charger directly into the wall socket.
🛠️ 3. Install a "Charger-Ready" Dedicated Circuit
If you are getting electrical work done now but can't get your hands on a smart wall-box yet, ask your electrician to install a dedicated heavy-duty power circuit with a standard power point at the end of it.
This gives you a safer, isolated line to plug your portable charger into right away without overloading your home's main circuits.
When your official charging station eventually arrives, the heavy lifting (running the cables through your walls) is already done! Electric Vehicles Canberra can easily swap the power point out for the charging station later with minimal fuss and cost.
🛑 REMINDER: Remember that all electrical work in Australia must legally be performed by a fully licensed electrician. Never attempt to DIY high-voltage wiring!
