π DRIVE WISE ROAD SAFETY: WHEN A TRUCK IS TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT! π
Have you ever looked in your rear-view mirror and realised a truck is following so closely that all you can see is the front of the truck? π³
This happened TWICE today and it's not good enough. As fellow road users, we are all responsible for our own actions - think about how this feels for our learners. It can be such an intimidating experience for even the most experienced driver β we display L plates for a reason!
Let's talk about the dangers of trucks tailgating cars and what you can do to stay safe.
π¨ WHY IS TAILGATING SO DANGEROUS?
π You have less time to react. If traffic suddenly slows, a vehicle ahead brakes or an animal jumps onto the road, you need time and space to respond. When a truck is right behind you, that pressure can be frightening.
π Trucks need significant stopping distance. Heavy vehicles can take considerably longer to stop than passenger cars, depending on their load, speed and road conditions. If a truck is following too closely, the risk of a serious rear-end collision increases.
π° It can make drivers panic. When a truck is sitting right on your tail, you might feel pressured to speed up, drive faster than the conditions allow, or make a manoeuvre you wouldn't normally make. That's when mistakes can happen.
π£οΈ It reduces your safety margin. If you need to brake suddenly, there may simply not be enough space for the truck behind you to stop safely.
π§οΈ Wet roads make things worse. Rain, gravel, poor visibility and slippery surfaces can all increase stopping distances and make a collision more likely.
β
SO, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF A TRUCK IS TAILGATING YOU?
βοΈ Stay calm. Easier said than done, I know! Take a breath and concentrate on what's happening in front of you.
βοΈ Don't speed up just because you're being pressured. Drive at a safe and legal speed for the conditions. Your safety matters more than someone else's impatience.
βοΈ Maintain your minimum 2 second following distance from the vehicle in front. This gives you more time to slow down gradually if traffic changes and reduces the chance of needing to brake suddenly.
βοΈ Avoid sudden braking. Brake smoothly when it is safe to do so. We are not there to teach a tailgater a lesson.
βοΈ Let them pass when it is safe and legal. If an appropriate overtaking lane or safe opportunity becomes available, allow the truck to pass when you can do so safely. Never pull onto an unsafe shoulder or drive onto loose gravel just to get out of the way.
βοΈ Don't engage in road rage. No brake checking, gesturing or trying to make a point. Your goal is to get home safely, not win an argument with a vehicle weighing many tonnes.
π A MESSAGE TO LEARNER DRIVERS
If you're learning to drive, please remember this: you are not responsible for managing another driver's impatience.
You are responsible for driving safely, legally and predictably. If a truck is following too closely, keep your eyes on the road ahead, maintain your space and make sensible decisions.
And to our experienced drivers β remember that the person in front of you may be a learner, a nervous driver or someone simply trying to get home to their family.
We all share the road, and we all deserve to feel safe on it.
π Professional truck drivers have a challenging job, often under tight schedules and demanding conditions. The vast majority of road users, whatever they drive, want to get home safely. This isn't about blaming truck drivers β it's about reminding EVERYONE that following at a safe distance saves lives.
β€οΈ A few extra seconds of patience could prevent a lifetime of heartbreak.
Please share this post. Let's keep our roads safer for everyone!
