Why a Professional Caravan Inspection is Worth Every Dollar
Buying a used caravan can be one of the biggest purchases many families make before heading off on holidays or travelling Australia. While a caravan may look immaculate in the online advertisement, photos rarely tell the full story.
We recently completed a Caravan Pre-Purchase Inspection Report for a customer who lived approximately 4–5 hours north of our workshop. Rather than making the long trip to inspect the caravan themselves, they engaged us to perform a thorough independent inspection before committing to the purchase.
It turned out to be one of the best decisions they could have made.

A Caravan That Looked Excellent Online
The caravan presented extremely well in the advertisement.
It had:
* Clean modern appearance
* Fresh decals and stickers
* No obvious damage in the listing photos
* A clear PPSR search
At first glance there was nothing that suggested the caravan had previously suffered accident damage.
However, that’s exactly why professional inspections exist.

The PPSR Search Was Clear
Before purchasing any caravan we always recommend completing a Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) search through:
www.ppsr.gov.au
Using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) you can check for:
* Financial encumbrances
* Written-off vehicle records
* Security interests
* Some insurance repair history
A PPSR search is an excellent starting point.
However…
A PPSR search cannot detect repairs that were never reported to an insurer.
If a previous owner performs repairs privately or has work completed outside the insurance system, those repairs generally won’t appear on a PPSR report.
That is exactly what happened with this caravan.

What We Found During Our Inspection
Our inspection quickly identified numerous warning signs indicating the caravan had previously suffered a frontal impact.
These included:
Cracked External Panelling Hidden Behind New Stickers
One section of damaged aluminium cladding had been disguised using a newly installed sticker.
Once examined closely it became obvious the sticker had been applied to hide cracking rather than for cosmetic appearance.

Failed Window Sealing
Around one of the windows we found:
* Cracked silicone
* Failed sealant
* Poor sealing workmanship
This is often a sign that body movement has occurred following structural repairs.
Failed window sealing can eventually allow water ingress into the caravan wall.

Poor Quality Body Repairs
Several areas showed evidence of extremely poor repair workmanship including:
* Incorrectly aligned body mouldings
* Misaligned trims
* Visible gaps
* Additional screws installed where they should never have been
* Cosmetic patch repairs
These repairs were clearly not completed to a professional manufacturing standard.

Excessive Sealant Used to Hide Damage
Another area showed excessive silicone and sealant being used to disguise joins and damaged sections.
Rather than repairing damaged panels correctly, additional sealant had simply been applied over the top.
This is a common sign of low-quality backyard repairs.

Experience Makes the Difference
None of these issues were obvious in the online advertisement.
None appeared on the PPSR search.
Without physically inspecting the caravan, many buyers would have purchased it believing it was accident free.
This is where years of caravan repair experience become invaluable.

Following our inspection we advised our customer not to purchase this caravan.
Although it appeared attractive online, the evidence strongly suggested it had previously sustained a frontal impact and received low-quality repairs that significantly affected its condition and value.
Avoiding this purchase potentially saved our customer many thousands of dollars in future repairs and protected them from buying a caravan with an unknown accident history.
