Monster Ignition Monster Ignition specialises in MSD Pro Mag 12LT Magneto and Points Box servicing and repairs.

With over 30 years race engine experience and always trying to do as much as possible in house we always worked on our own ignition systems. We have a Vane Distributor machine that can spin a complete Pro Mag 12LT ignition system well past 8,000 engine rpm. We can also test magneto generator output and also voltage at the coil and spark plug and miliseconds of burn time.

The project for a MSD Pro Mag 12LT for a engine that's not listed in the MSD catalogue is getting closer to completion. Fitted the lower shaft housing today to a engine block to check gear centreline and housing fitment. We are super excited about this project. Stay tuned 😉

Jake Pobjoy sent us a 81063 Points Box that wouldn't allow his 410 Sprintcar to start. We found there was spark so we tested at 500rpm. Low output and misfiring. It required a new ignition coil. The video of the after test is in the comments.

The process of reconditioning a 12LT Magneto.
First step is to mount the magneto to the test bench and test the generator amperage output and the magnetic pick up voltage output and document the data.
Next we partially strip the magneto so we can check the phasing of the top and bottom rotating magnets in our jig and also inspect the clearance between the magnets and stator and record the findings.
Then the centre bolt is undone and the generator is disassembled. It is common to see the top magnets corroded. If the clearance between the magnets and stator were inconsistent, we machine the magnets to equalise the height.
We machine the stator when we find the iron core poles to be corroded or they are inconsistent in height. Equal clearance between all magnets and poles gives a soother operation and higher output.
Clearances are reset to our specs using shims.
The rotating magnets are bead blasted and the stator epoxy surface scuffed and all surfaces then coated to prevent premature corrosion.
If the magnetic pick up voltage was found to be below our specs we adjust it for a stronger signal from 500rpm onwards which helps with starting and stumble free acceleration.
All parts are cleaned and the rotor button is either replaced or the tab terminal is surfaced or replaced. If the cap and leads are supplied they are cleaned and the leads ohms tested.
The generator has a auxiliary ground wire fitted to the windings and the wiring loom sheathing is replaced with more flexibility than the original.
The generator is then remounted on the test bench for final amperage output and magnetic pick up voltage output testing and documented and also the system is ran with a Points Box.

Just finished reconditioning and testing a 12LT Magneto for James Oliver to be fitted by JMI into the freshly rebuilt 410 for a assault on this years Victorian SRA series.
Good luck for the upcoming racing season.

After plenty of late nights getting work done, we are having a long weekend off. We have left our number one staff member Frank in charge to keep things rolling along.
Hopefully 😆
