INSIDE A PORSCHE PDK TRANSMISSION

This Porsche Boxster is undergoing one of the many technically demanding repairs performed by James at North Star Motors: internal work on its PDK dual-clutch transmission.

A PDK is not a conventional automatic gearbox. It is effectively two computer-controlled manual gearboxes working together. One controls the odd-numbered gears while the other controls the even-numbered gears, allowing the next gear to be prepared before the current gear is released.

This produces the remarkably quick and smooth changes for which Porsche’s PDK is known.

It also makes repairing one exceptionally difficult.

Access requires substantial dismantling around the rear of the Boxster. Inside the transmission are tightly packaged gearsets, shafts, bearings, selectors, sensors and electrohydraulic components that must operate together within extremely fine tolerances.
