🚙 Petrol bills climbing? A wave of new plug-in hybrids is heading to Australia by 2027 🇦
With the average Aussie driving about 37km a day, a PHEV can handle the school run and commute on cheap home electricity, with 60–140km of pure EV range, and still have a petrol engine for the long highway trips.

Coming soon: the Toyota RAV4 PHEV with around 200–220kW and AWD, the Omoda 7 with 255kW and ~90km of EV range, the BYD Shark 6 plug-in ute with V2L power in the tray, plus the GWM Haval H6 PHEV, Skoda Kodiaq PHEV and Cupra Formentor VZe.

💡 Tip: A PHEV only saves you money if you plug it in. Most charge overnight on a regular 10A socket, and the FBT exemption for PHEVs has ended, so base your sums on real fuel savings.

Got a driveway and a short daily commute? A PHEV like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV or BYD Sealion 6 can cover the average ~35km Aussie commute fuel-free. Apartment living or street parking? A traditional hybrid is the easy, low-risk pick – and hybrids are holding their resale value exceptionally well.

💡 Tip: If you buy a PHEV, plug it in every night. Run it on petrol only and you're hauling a heavy battery around – fuel economy can end up worse than a regular petrol car.
