Bad Spray vs Good Spray — Old School Diesel Injectors
Have a look at these two videos.
One injector is spraying properly.
The other one… isn’t.
In an old school diesel, the injector has one very important job — turn diesel fuel into a fine, even mist so it can burn cleanly and efficiently inside the engine.
When the injector spray pattern is good, the fuel atomises properly. You get a nice clean spray, better combustion, smoother running, easier starting, better economy, less smoke, and less stress on the engine.
When the injector spray pattern is bad, it can dribble, streak, spray unevenly, or dump fuel in the wrong shape. That fuel does not burn properly. It can cause smoke, rough running, high exhaust temperatures, poor economy, hard starting, piston damage, carbon build-up, and general engine misery.
This is why old school diesel injectors should not be forgotten about.
On many older mechanical diesels, injectors should be checked and overhauled around every 100,000 to 150,000km, depending on how the vehicle is used. If it tows, tours, works hard, or has had poor fuel quality, don’t stretch it too far.
And don’t forget the basics.
Regular diesel fuel filter changes are critical. A dirty, blocked, cheap, or neglected fuel filter can cause poor fuel delivery and contamination issues. Diesel injection systems hate dirt and water. Once bad fuel or contamination gets into the system, things can get expensive very quickly.
A good injector spray pattern is not just about power.
It is about clean combustion.
It is about reliability.
It is about engine life.
It is about stopping diesels smoking when they do not need to.
Old school diesels are tough, but they still need proper care.
Ignore the injectors long enough and the engine will usually tell you — with smoke, poor starting, rough running, lack of power, or worse.
Look after the fuel system, and it will look after you.
