πŸ–€πŸ’› MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH WEEK πŸ’›πŸ–€

At Eureka Truck Training, we know that looking after your wellbeing is just as important as looking after your vehicle.

Truck drivers, operators and workers often face long hours, demanding schedules, financial pressures and personal challenges that aren't always visible to others.

This Men's Mental Health Week, we encourage everyone to take a moment to check in on a mate.

Make a phone call
Send a text message
Catch up for a coffee
Take the time to listen

You don't need to have all the answers. Sometimes simply letting someone know you care can make all the difference.

Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Let's continue building a safer industry where people feel comfortable speaking up and supporting one another.

πŸš› Strong Mates. Stronger Together.

Just Two Seconds Can Change Everything

For truck drivers, the risks are even greater. Heavy vehicles require more distance to stop, and hazards can develop quickly. A moment of distraction can have serious consequences for you and everyone sharing the road.

At Eureka Truck Training, we continually reinforce the importance of:

βœ… Keeping your eyes on the road
βœ… Eliminating mobile phone distractions
βœ… Maintaining situational awareness
βœ… Planning ahead and scanning for hazards
βœ… Driving professionally at all times

No text, notification, social media post or phone call is worth risking a life.

If you need to use your phone, pull over safely first.

Every safe journey starts with a focused driver.

πŸš› Truck Rollovers – Why They Happen

Every year, truck rollovers occur on Australian roads, many of which are preventable.

While heavy vehicles are designed to carry significant loads safely, understanding the factors that contribute to rollovers is critical for every driver.

One of the biggest contributors is speed. A truck may feel stable travelling in a straight line, but entering a corner, roundabout or bend too quickly can cause forces to build rapidly and overcome the vehicle's stability.

Another important factor is a vehicle's centre of gravity. The higher the load, the greater the risk of a rollover. Tankers, tippers, livestock carriers and vehicles carrying elevated loads require additional care, particularly when cornering or changing direction.

Roundabouts are a common location for truck rollovers. Drivers must remember that heavy vehicles need to approach roundabouts at an appropriate speed and be prepared for load movement as the vehicle changes direction.

Load movement is another significant risk. Even when a load appears secure, shifting cargo can alter the vehicle's balance and affect stability. Proper load restraint and load distribution are essential for safe operation.

Finally, driver behaviour plays a major role. Fatigue, distraction, aggressive driving, harsh steering inputs and poor hazard perception can all increase rollover risk.

Professional drivers understand that arriving safely is always more important than arriving quickly.

At Eureka Truck Training, we teach drivers to understand vehicle dynamics, recognise hazards and develop the skills required to operate heavy vehicles safely and professionally.

πŸš› Slow down for corners.
πŸš› Manage your load correctly.
πŸš› Plan ahead and drive smoothly.
πŸš› Arrive home safely.

Safe Following Distances Save Lives

One of the most underestimated skills in truck driving is maintaining a safe following distance.

Heavy vehicles can weigh many tonnes when loaded, and unlike passenger vehicles, they require significantly more distance to stop safely.

Factors that can increase stopping distances include:

βœ… Vehicle weight and load distribution
βœ… Wet or slippery road surfaces
βœ… Driver fatigue or distraction
βœ… Vehicle speed
βœ… Brake and tyre condition
βœ… Road gradients

A common mistake made by both truck and car drivers is underestimating the space a heavy vehicle needs to stop.

Professional truck drivers are trained to:

βœ” Maintain adequate following distances
βœ” Scan well ahead for hazards
βœ” Anticipate changing traffic conditions
βœ” Adjust speed to suit weather and road conditions
βœ” Drive defensively to reduce risk

Remember, the space in front of a truck is not wasted road space, it's a critical safety buffer designed to protect everyone on the road.

At Eureka Truck Training, we teach drivers that safe driving isn't just about operating a vehicle, it's about understanding risk, making good decisions, and arriving home safely every day.

Stay alert. Stay professional. Stay safe.

At Eureka Truck Training, we understand that stepping into a truck for the first time can feel overwhelming, especially when dealing with anxiety or a lack of previous experience.

We're incredibly grateful to receive feedback like this from one of our recent HR-B students:

"As someone with diagnosed anxiety, I would really like to thank Eureka and Lee for the training and information provided on the HR-B course I did with them."

Our goal is to make every student feel supported, comfortable, and confident throughout their training journey. Whether you're completely new to trucks or looking to upgrade your licence, our experienced trainers are here to help every step of the way.

**FLOODWATER SAFETY – IF IT'S FLOODED, FORGET IT!**

With severe weather impacting many parts of Western Australia, now is a timely reminder that floodwaters pose a serious risk to all road users, including heavy vehicle operators.

What may appear to be a shallow crossing can hide significant dangers beneath the surface:

⚠️ Strong currents capable of moving vehicles
⚠️ Washouts and road damage
⚠️ Debris including branches, rocks and fencing
⚠️ Rapidly changing water depths
⚠️ Damage to brakes, wheel bearings, electrical systems and air intakes

For professional drivers, taking chances with floodwater can have serious consequences for yourself, your vehicle, and other road users.

βœ… Stop and assess the situation
βœ… Follow Main Roads WA and emergency service warnings
βœ… Obey Road closures and detours
βœ… Turn around and find an alternative route if conditions are unsafe

Remember, no delivery, schedule or destination is worth risking your life.

**TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN.**

HEAVY VEHICLE FACTS EVERY DRIVER SHOULD KNOW

Whether you're an experienced truck driver or just starting your heavy vehicle journey, understanding your legal responsibilities and safe driving practices is essential.

Here are some important heavy vehicle facts every WA driver should know:

βœ… Licence Classes Matter
A heavy vehicle licence only allows you to drive the class of vehicle you are licensed for. HR, HC and MC licences all have different vehicle requirements and operating conditions.

βœ… Load Restraint Is the Driver's Responsibility
Before every trip, ensure your load is correctly restrained. An unsecured load can shift during braking, cornering or acceleration, creating a serious risk to yourself and other road users. In Western Australia, load restraint requirements are governed by the Road Traffic (Vehicles) Regulations and reference the nationally recognised Load Restraint Guide.

βœ… Conduct A Thorough Pre-Start Inspection
A proper pre-start should include checking:
β€’ Tyres and wheel security
β€’ Lights and indicators
β€’ Mirrors
β€’ Brakes
β€’ Air leaks
β€’ Couplings and connections
β€’ Load security

Many mechanical failures can be identified before leaving the yard.

βœ… Following Distance Saves Lives
Heavy vehicles require significantly more distance to stop than passenger vehicles. Maintaining a safe following distance gives you valuable reaction time and reduces the risk of rear-end collisions.

βœ… Know Your Vehicle Height
Bridge strikes continue to occur across Australia. Always know your overall vehicle height and be aware of height restrictions on your route.

βœ… Fatigue Is A Major Killer
Feeling tired, yawning, drifting within your lane, or missing road signs are all warning signs. If you're fatigued, stop and rest. No load is worth risking lives.

βœ… Chain of Responsibility (CoR)
Heavy vehicle safety doesn't stop with the driver. In Western Australia, anyone involved in the transport chain can be held accountable if their actions contribute to unsafe heavy vehicle operations.

βœ… Professional Drivers Never Stop Learning
The best drivers continually develop their skills, stay up to date with legislation, and remain focused on safety every day they get behind the wheel.

At Eureka Truck Training, we believe professional driving is about far more than obtaining a licence. It's about developing safe habits, industry knowledge, and the skills needed to operate heavy vehicles responsibly.

Stay safe, stay professional, and remember, every trip starts with the right attitude.
