🚛 Truck Rollovers – Why They Happen

Every year, truck rollovers occur on Australian roads, many of which are preventable.

While heavy vehicles are designed to carry significant loads safely, understanding the factors that contribute to rollovers is critical for every driver.

One of the biggest contributors is speed. A truck may feel stable travelling in a straight line, but entering a corner, roundabout or bend too quickly can cause forces to build rapidly and overcome the vehicle's stability.

Another important factor is a vehicle's centre of gravity. The higher the load, the greater the risk of a rollover. Tankers, tippers, livestock carriers and vehicles carrying elevated loads require additional care, particularly when cornering or changing direction.

Roundabouts are a common location for truck rollovers. Drivers must remember that heavy vehicles need to approach roundabouts at an appropriate speed and be prepared for load movement as the vehicle changes direction.

Load movement is another significant risk. Even when a load appears secure, shifting cargo can alter the vehicle's balance and affect stability. Proper load restraint and load distribution are essential for safe operation.

Finally, driver behaviour plays a major role. Fatigue, distraction, aggressive driving, harsh steering inputs and poor hazard perception can all increase rollover risk.

Safe Following Distances Save Lives

One of the most underestimated skills in truck driving is maintaining a safe following distance.

Heavy vehicles can weigh many tonnes when loaded, and unlike passenger vehicles, they require significantly more distance to stop safely.

Factors that can increase stopping distances include:

✅ Vehicle weight and load distribution
✅ Wet or slippery road surfaces
✅ Driver fatigue or distraction
✅ Vehicle speed
✅ Brake and tyre condition
✅ Road gradients

A common mistake made by both truck and car drivers is underestimating the space a heavy vehicle needs to stop.

**FLOODWATER SAFETY – IF IT'S FLOODED, FORGET IT!**

With severe weather impacting many parts of Western Australia, now is a timely reminder that floodwaters pose a serious risk to all road users, including heavy vehicle operators.

What may appear to be a shallow crossing can hide significant dangers beneath the surface:

⚠️ Strong currents capable of moving vehicles
⚠️ Washouts and road damage
⚠️ Debris including branches, rocks and fencing
⚠️ Rapidly changing water depths
⚠️ Damage to brakes, wheel bearings, electrical systems and air intakes

For professional drivers, taking chances with floodwater can have serious consequences for yourself, your vehicle, and other road users.

✅ Stop and assess the situation
✅ Follow Main Roads WA and emergency service warnings
✅ Obey Road closures and detours
✅ Turn around and find an alternative route if conditions are unsafe

HEAVY VEHICLE FACTS EVERY DRIVER SHOULD KNOW

Whether you're an experienced truck driver or just starting your heavy vehicle journey, understanding your legal responsibilities and safe driving practices is essential.

Here are some important heavy vehicle facts every WA driver should know:

✅ Licence Classes Matter
A heavy vehicle licence only allows you to drive the class of vehicle you are licensed for. HR, HC and MC licences all have different vehicle requirements and operating conditions.

✅ Load Restraint Is the Driver's Responsibility
Before every trip, ensure your load is correctly restrained. An unsecured load can shift during braking, cornering or acceleration, creating a serious risk to yourself and other road users. In Western Australia, load restraint requirements are governed by the Road Traffic (Vehicles) Regulations and reference the nationally recognised Load Restraint Guide.

✅ Conduct A Thorough Pre-Start Inspection
A proper pre-start should include checking:
• Tyres and wheel security
• Lights and indicators
