Feedback like this means a lot to the team at Eureka Truck Training.

Getting your MC licence is a big achievement, and it takes commitment, concentration and plenty of work behind the wheel. Our trainers are there to support our students throughout that process, while making sure they develop the skills and confidence needed to operate safely on the road.

A huge thank you to this student for taking the time to share their experience and for the fantastic recommendation.

And a special mention to Alan for continuing to demonstrate the passion, knowledge and commitment our trainers bring to their students every day.

Coupling & Uncoupling: A Routine Task That Deserves Your Full Attention

For experienced heavy vehicle drivers, coupling and uncoupling can become an everyday task. But familiarity should never replace a safe and systematic approach.

Whether operating an HC or MC combination, taking the time to complete the correct checks can help prevent equipment damage, trailer separation and potentially serious incidents.

Some key considerations include:

βœ… Correct positioning – Ensure the prime mover and trailer are correctly aligned before coupling.
βœ… Visual inspection – Don't rely solely on feel or sound. Visually confirm that the locking mechanism is correctly engaged and secure.
βœ… Airlines and electrical connections – Check that all connections are correctly fitted, secure and free from damage, twisting or potential interference.
βœ… Landing gear – Confirm landing legs are correctly positioned and fully raised before moving off.
βœ… Tug test – Conduct an appropriate tug test to help confirm the coupling has correctly engaged.
βœ… Final walk-around – Before departure, complete a final inspection of the entire combination. Check the coupling, connections, lights, tyres, load security and surrounding area.

At Eureka Truck Training, we place a strong emphasis on practical, real-world heavy vehicle skills. Our training and Verification of Competency assessments help drivers develop and demonstrate safe operating practices across a range of heavy vehicle and trailer combinations.

Don't let familiarity lead to complacency. Take the time, follow the procedure and check the connection before you move.

HEAVY VEHICLE TRAINING FOR DRIVERS, WORKPLACES AND INDUSTRY

Heavy vehicle training is about more than obtaining a licence. It is about developing the knowledge, practical skills and safer driving behaviours required to operate heavy vehicles confidently and competently.

At Eureka Truck Training, we provide professional heavy vehicle training from our dedicated facility in Bellevue, Western Australia, supporting individuals and organisations across transport, mining, logistics, construction and other industries.

HEAVY VEHICLE LICENCE TRAINING

Whether you are entering the industry, upgrading your existing licence or progressing towards Multi Combination, we offer training across:

β€’ HR-A Automatic
β€’ HR-B Synchromesh
β€’ HR Open Class Road Ranger
β€’ HC Heavy Combination
β€’ MC Multi Combination

Our experienced Trainer Assessors provide practical, hands-on training with a strong focus on developing the skills required to safely operate larger and more complex vehicles.

Training can cover areas including:

β€’ Vehicle familiarisation
β€’ Pre-start and pre-departure inspections
β€’ Vehicle control and road positioning
β€’ Observation and hazard awareness
β€’ Heavy vehicle braking and stopping distances
β€’ Gear selection and transmission operation
β€’ Reversing and manoeuvring
β€’ Coupling and uncoupling
β€’ Trailer management
β€’ Turning and road positioning
β€’ Managing vehicle dimensions and blind spots
β€’ Sharing the road with other road users
β€’ Safe and professional heavy vehicle operation

IN-HOUSE PRACTICAL DRIVING ASSESSMENTS

A major advantage of training with Eureka is our ability to conduct Department of Transport-approved Heavy Vehicle Practical Driving Assessments at our Bellevue facility.

This provides a streamlined pathway from training through to assessment, with our team supporting students throughout their heavy vehicle licence upgrade.

WORKPLACE VOC AND SKILLS TRAINING

Heavy vehicle competency does not stop once a driver obtains their licence.

Eureka Truck Training can also assist organisations with Verification of Competency (VOC) and targeted workplace training for specific heavy vehicle tasks.

This can include areas such as:

β€’ Coupling and uncoupling
β€’ Pre-start inspections
β€’ Pre-departure checks
β€’ Mid-trip inspections
β€’ Reversing techniques
β€’ Vehicle manoeuvring
β€’ Heavy vehicle familiarisation
β€’ Other identified operational requirements

VOC and targeted training can be particularly valuable for organisations wanting to verify existing skills, address identified capability gaps or support safer and more consistent workplace practices.

SUPPORTING INDUSTRY

We understand that heavy vehicle requirements can vary significantly between workplaces.

Our team can discuss training and assessment solutions for individual drivers, small groups and larger organisations, including requirements relevant to transport, logistics, mining, resources, construction and other heavy vehicle operations.

From someone taking their first step into heavy vehicles through to an experienced driver progressing to HC or MC, our focus remains the same:

Professional training, practical skills and safer heavy vehicle operators.

HEAVY VEHICLE VOCs | VERIFY SKILLS. SUPPORT SAFER OPERATIONS.

A heavy vehicle licence demonstrates that a driver has met the requirements to hold that licence class. In the workplace, employers may also need to verify that drivers can safely and competently perform the specific heavy vehicle tasks required in their role.

Eureka Truck Training can provide **Verification of Competency (VOC)** assessments tailored to your organisation’s vehicles, operating environment and workplace requirements.

VOCs can focus on specific tasks or form part of a broader heavy vehicle competency assessment, including:

β€’ Coupling and uncoupling trailers
β€’ Pre-start and pre-departure inspections
β€’ Mid-trip inspections and vehicle checks
β€’ Reversing and manoeuvring techniques
β€’ Trailer positioning and controlled reversing
β€’ Vehicle familiarisation
β€’ Safe vehicle operation and control
β€’ Load and vehicle awareness
β€’ Workplace-specific driving procedures
β€’ Operational safety requirements
β€’ Other heavy vehicle tasks relevant to the driver's role

Assessments can be contextualised around the equipment and tasks your drivers actually encounter, providing employers with a practical way to verify competency rather than relying solely on the licence held.

Whether you require a *single-task VOC*, such as coupling and uncoupling, or a more comprehensive assessment covering multiple aspects of heavy vehicle operation, speak with the Eureka Truck Training team about developing an option suitable for your workplace.
