TRUCK CAB TILTING: A ROUTINE TASK WITH SERIOUS SAFETY RISKS

Tilting a truck cab may seem like a straightforward maintenance task, but when performed incorrectly, it can expose drivers, mechanics and other workers to serious injury or even fatal consequences.

At Eureka Truck Training, we believe that safe heavy vehicle operation extends well beyond driving skills. Understanding vehicle systems, recognising hazards and following safe operating procedures are essential responsibilities for anyone working around heavy vehicles.

⚠️ UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS

Many cab-over-engine trucks incorporate a tilting cab to provide access to the engine and associated mechanical components.

Depending on the vehicle, the cab may be raised using a manual hydraulic pump, an electrically operated hydraulic system or another manufacturer-designed mechanism.

While these systems are designed to assist with maintenance access, significant hazards can arise if the correct procedures are not followed.

Potential hazards include:

- Uncontrolled cab movement: A cab may move unexpectedly due to incorrect operation, hydraulic failure or an unsecured mechanism.
- Crushing and entrapment: Workers can be seriously injured if positioned between the cab and chassis or within the cab's movement path.
- Falling objects: Loose items inside the cab may shift or fall as the cab is tilted.
- Incorrect cab locking: Failure to properly secure the cab after lowering may create a serious hazard when the vehicle is driven.
- Hydraulic or mechanical faults: Damaged components, leaks or defective locking mechanisms can compromise safe operation.
- Vehicle movement: Inadequate parking precautions can introduce additional hazards during maintenance activities.

BEFORE TILTING THE CAB

A safe procedure begins before the cab is raised.

1. Select a suitable location. Park on firm, level ground with sufficient overhead and surrounding clearance.

2. Secure the vehicle. Apply the park brake, select the appropriate transmission position, shut down the engine and use wheel chocks where required by the manufacturer's procedure and workplace risk assessment.

3. Check the surrounding area. Ensure there are no people, obstacles, overhead structures or other hazards within the cab's movement path.

4. Secure the cab interior. Remove or secure loose items, close doors and follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding windows, storage compartments and other cab components.

5. Inspect the tilting system. Check for visible hydraulic leaks, damaged components, abnormal wear or other defects.

6. Consult the manufacturer's instructions. Understand the correct operating sequence, locking arrangements and safety mechanisms for the particular truck.

RAISING THE CAB SAFELY

Truck cab tilting systems vary considerably between manufacturers and models. There is no single procedure suitable for every vehicle.

When raising the cab:

- Operate the system only if trained and authorised.
- Follow the manufacturer's specified sequence.
- Keep all personnel clear of the cab's movement and potential crushing zones.
- Never place any part of your body beneath an unsupported cab.
- Raise the cab to the manufacturer's specified position.
- Engage and verify the approved mechanical safety support or locking device before entering the danger area.
- Never rely solely on hydraulic pressure to support a raised cab.

IMPORTANT: A hydraulic system is not a substitute for a manufacturer-approved mechanical safety support where one is required.

LOWERING AND SECURING THE CAB

Lowering the cab requires just as much care as raising it.

Before lowering:

- Confirm all tools, equipment and personnel are clear.
- Ensure maintenance activities are complete.
- Remove or disengage safety supports only in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
- Lower the cab using the correct operating procedure.
- Confirm the cab is fully seated and that all required locking mechanisms are positively engaged.
- Check any cab-lock warning indicators and perform the manufacturer's required verification before driving.

A CAB THAT APPEARS CLOSED IS NOT NECESSARILY SECURE.

Never operate a truck on the road unless the cab has been correctly lowered, locked and verified as safe.

SAFETY STARTS WITH KNOWLEDGE AND GOOD HABITS

Truck cab tilting is an excellent example of why heavy vehicle safety must extend beyond the driver's seat.

Pre-operational inspections, defect identification, hazard awareness, correct maintenance procedures and clear communication all contribute to safer workplaces.

A Truck Licence Is the Beginning. Professional Driving Is About What Comes Next.

Obtaining a heavy vehicle licence is an important achievement, but becoming a safe and professional heavy vehicle driver involves much more than being able to operate the vehicle.

Every day, heavy vehicle drivers need to manage changing road conditions, vehicle dynamics, fatigue, other road users and the additional responsibility that comes with operating a larger and heavier vehicle.

Some of the fundamentals we believe every heavy vehicle driver should continue to focus on include:

🔹 Pre-start inspections

A good pre-start isn't just a box-ticking exercise. Tyres, wheels, lights, fluid levels, mirrors, brakes, air systems, coupling equipment and general vehicle condition should all form part of a driver's routine.

Identifying a problem before moving the vehicle is always preferable to discovering it on the road.

🔹 Following distance and stopping distance

Heavy vehicles require considerably more distance to stop than passenger vehicles, particularly when loaded.

Maintaining an appropriate following distance provides valuable time to identify hazards, make decisions and respond progressively rather than relying on sudden braking or evasive action.

🔹 Understanding vehicle dimensions

Height, width, length, wheelbase, rear overhang and turning characteristics all matter.

Professional drivers are constantly considering where the entire vehicle is going, not simply where the driver's seat is positioned.

This becomes particularly important when turning, reversing, manoeuvring in confined areas and operating around pedestrians or other vehicles.

🔹 Managing fatigue

Fatigue can significantly affect concentration, reaction time and decision-making.

Planning the journey, taking appropriate breaks, recognising early warning signs and understanding personal limitations are important parts of professional heavy vehicle operation.

🔹 Reading the road ahead

Good drivers don't simply react to what is immediately in front of them.

They continually scan ahead for intersections, traffic changes, pedestrians, merging vehicles, roadworks, changing speed zones and developing hazards.

The earlier a hazard is identified, the more options a driver generally has available.

🔹 Smooth vehicle operation

Professional driving isn't about rushing.

Smooth acceleration, appropriate gear selection, progressive braking, good positioning and forward planning can contribute to safer vehicle operation, reduced vehicle wear and a more comfortable journey.

🔹 Never stop learning
