Owning a 4WD Is One Thing. Knowing What It Can Do Is Another.
For many people, buying a 4WD opens the door to some incredible experiences. Beach trips, bush tracks, camping weekends, fishing spots and exploring places that a normal vehicle simply can't reach.
But how well do you actually know your 4WD?
Modern 4WDs are incredibly capable, but getting the most out of them isn't about driving harder. It's about understanding the vehicle, reading the terrain and knowing what to do before a small challenge becomes a big problem.
Here are some of the fundamentals every recreational 4WD owner should understand.
🔹 Tyre pressures matter
One of the biggest differences you can make off-road is choosing an appropriate tyre pressure for the conditions.
Sand, gravel, rocky terrain and unsealed roads can require very different approaches. Understanding when and why to adjust pressures can improve traction, comfort and vehicle performance.
And just as importantly, you need to know when to reinflate them.
🔹 Know your 4WD system
High range, low range, centre diff locks, rear diff locks, traction control, hill descent control and different terrain modes can be confusing if you've never been shown how they work.
You don't need to be a mechanic, but you should understand the basic systems fitted to your vehicle and when they may be useful.
🔹 Learn to read the terrain
Good 4WDing isn't about pointing the vehicle at an obstacle and hoping for the best.
Look ahead.
Where are the ruts? How soft is the sand? Is there enough clearance? Is there a better line? What's on the other side of that crest?
Sometimes getting out of the vehicle and having a look is the smartest thing you can do.
🔹 Momentum doesn't mean excessive speed
This is particularly important in sand. Maintaining appropriate momentum can help, but simply using more throttle isn't always the answer. Correct tyre pressures, smooth inputs and choosing the right line can often achieve far more than attacking an obstacle with speed.
🔹 Understand your vehicle's clearance
That shiny new 4WD might look unstoppable in the driveway, but underneath it are components you don't want meeting the ground.
Understanding approach, departure and ramp-over angles, wheel placement and where the lower points of your vehicle are located can help prevent unnecessary damage.
🔹 Recovery equipment is only useful if you know how to use it
Having recovery equipment in the back of the 4WD is a great start.
Knowing when to use it, how to use it and when NOT to use it is far more important. Recovery situations can involve significant forces. Equipment selection, rated recovery points and safe recovery techniques should always be taken seriously.
🔹 Don't forget the simple things
A good day out can quickly change if you're unprepared.
Consider communications, water, first aid, tyre repair equipment, a compressor, suitable recovery equipment and letting someone know where you're going, particularly when travelling into more remote areas.
