New data from AADA and AutoGrab offers a snapshot of what Australians are buying in the used-car market and how tastes are shifting.

➡️ Monthly used-car sales are on the rise, with 258,127 vehicles sold in September, up 6% on August and marking a third consecutive monthly increase.

➡️ The manual is becoming a rare breed. Just 6.6% of used vehicles sold in September had a manual transmission, down from 8.3% a year earlier.

➡️ White continues to rule the road, ranking as the most popular colour across all major brands examined. Mitsubishi topped the list, with 42.1% of sales in white.

➡️ The 2WD ute is becoming an increasingly rare sight, with 82.2% of used utes sold in September being 4WDs.

➡️ Electric vehicle sales have grown to account for 2.1% of the market share in September.

From fading gear sticks to Australia's enduring love of white cars, the data reveals a few shifts and some habits that aren't going anywhere.

State vs State: The Ford Ranger rules almost everywhere.

The Ford Ranger was Australia's best-selling 1–5-year-old used vehicle in 7 of 8 states and territories in August.

The exception? The ACT, where the Toyota RAV4 pipped the Ranger 27 sales to 19.

The AADA has congratulated the Albanese Government for expanding the DRIVEN Program to include EV servicing and repair equipment, a change that adopts recommendations put forward by AADA and recognises the significant investments being made by franchised new car dealers to support Australia's transition to electric vehicles.

"Recent record EV sales demonstrate that the transition is happening now. These changes will help dealers meet the challenges of the fastest transition the Australian automotive industry has ever experienced while ensuring motorists continue to have access to safe, high-quality EV sales, servicing and repair facilities," said AADA CEO James Voortman.

Next up in our 2026 Convention & Expo highlights are the Pentana Solutions Expo Live Stage presentations.

The Live Stage was buzzing across both days of the Expo, with packed crowds turning out for all 10 sessions. Attendees heard practical insights from industry experts on topics including customer experience, AI, cybersecurity, EV charging, finance, insurance, transport, service operations and emerging technologies helping dealerships improve efficiency and drive growth.

A big thank you to all of our Live Stage presenters and to Pentana Solutions for supporting this fantastic aspect of the expo floor. It was great to see so many delegates making the most of these informative and highly engaging sessions.

We're sharing some highlights from last week's 2026 AADA Convention & Expo from Sydney, beginning with our Main Stage sessions.

Across two days, delegates heard from an outstanding lineup of industry leaders and experts covering everything from the future of automotive retail and growing used car operations, to global market challenges, customer retention, leadership, strategy and the opportunities AI presents for dealerships. We also heard from AADA CEO James Voortman on the work the AADA is doing to advocate for franchised new car dealers across Australia.
