🔧 COMMON RAIL DIESEL – INTAKE MANIFOLD CARBON BUILD-UP

One of the problems with Common Rail Diesel (CRD) engines is that carbon can gradually build up inside the intake manifold, restricting the amount of air getting into the engine.

Because this happens slowly over time, you may not notice the gradual loss of performance.

As the restriction becomes more severe, you can experience:

• Reduced engine power
• Increased fuel consumption
• Poor engine response
• Eventually, the vehicle may enter limp mode

In this vehicle, we removed the intake manifold to address the carbon build-up and restore proper airflow to the engine.

🔧 Why are we replacing the starter motor at the same time?

The starter motor sits beneath the intake manifold, meaning considerable disassembly is required just to access it. While everything was already apart, we found the vehicle was still running its original 2012 starter motor.

The starter hadn't necessarily failed — replacing it was a preventative maintenance decision.

Starter motors are a wear item, and replacing an ageing original unit while access is already available can save the customer from paying for much of the same labour again if it fails later.

Sometimes good mechanical maintenance isn't just about repairing what's already broken — it's about recognising potential problems and making sensible preventative decisions while the opportunity is there.

Sometimes one job uncovers another problem before it leaves you stranded.

This vehicle came to us for the installation of a dual battery system, but while Troy was carrying out the work, he discovered that the primary battery earth cable was heavily corroded and needed replacing.

The vehicle has also been experiencing issues with cold starting. Being a diesel, glow plugs are one of the first areas we’d normally investigate when diagnosing a cold-start problem — but finding this level of corrosion in the main battery wiring gives us another important issue to address first.

It’s a good example of why we don’t just focus on the part we’ve been asked to install. If we notice something that could be contributing to an existing problem — or cause another one down the track — we’ll bring it to the customer’s attention.

Little details matter.

While replacing the timing chain on this Nissan Navara D40, Troy discovered the woodruff key was missing. It's a tiny component, but it plays a critical role in keeping the engine correctly timed.
