🚐 THINGS WE SEE EVERY WEEK — Your setup evolves

Think back to when you first got your caravan.

Chances are, your setup looked a little different to what it does today.

Over time, things have a habit of appearing…

☀️ Solar
🔋 Extra batteries
🧰 Toolboxes
🚲 Bike racks
⚡ Generator
🔥 BBQ
🛞 Extra spares
📦 Storage solutions
🏕️ More camping gear

And then there are all those little things that find a permanent home inside the van.

Individually, they might not seem like much.

But over a couple of years, “we’ve only added a few things” can become quite a different setup.

That’s something we see regularly when weighing vehicles and caravans.

So if your setup was weighed a few years ago, it’s worth asking:

Is it still the same setup you’re travelling with today?

Because your weights can change as your setup — and the way you travel — evolves.

🚐 OL’ MATE — “We’ll need all of it…”

You know how it goes…

You start planning the trip and suddenly everything feels essential. 😄

💧 Water
🚲 Bikes
🧰 Tools
🔥 BBQ
🔋 Extra battery
🎣 Fishing gear
🥫 Food and supplies
🪑 Chairs
⛽ Extra fuel
⚡ Generator

And Ol’ Mate’s standing there thinking:

“We’ll need all of it…”

To be fair, depending on how and where you travel, you just might!

But all those little — and not-so-little — extras add weight to your setup.

That’s why thinking about how you actually travel is so important when choosing a vehicle and caravan.

A setup for weekends in caravan parks can have very different needs to one built for extended or off-grid touring.

It’s not about leaving the good stuff behind.

It’s about choosing a setup that can accommodate the way you want to travel.

Because funny how quickly the “essentials” add up. 😉

🚐 BEFORE YOU BUY — Buy for the way you travel

Not everyone caravans the same way.

A weekend at a caravan park can look very different to a few weeks of touring or heading off-grid.

Longer or more remote trips might mean carrying more:

💧 Water
🥫 Food and supplies
🔋 Batteries and solar
🧰 Tools and recovery gear
⛽ Extra fuel
🧳 Clothes and personal belongings

And all of that adds weight.

That’s why choosing the right caravan isn’t just about finding a layout you love or checking what your vehicle can tow.

Think about how you’ll actually use it once you leave the driveway.

Will you mostly stay in caravan parks with facilities nearby?

Or are you planning longer trips where you’ll need to carry more of what you need with you?

Neither is right or wrong — they’re simply different ways of travelling, with different needs.

So before you buy, picture the setup loaded for your real adventures, not just how it looks sitting at the dealership.

The right setup isn’t just about what you can tow — it’s about what you’ll carry.

🚙 WHAT’S ALREADY FITTED TO YOUR TOW VEHICLE?

Quick question for the touring crowd…

What have you already added to your vehicle?

Bullbar?
Winch?
Canopy?
Drawers?
Fridge?
Second battery?
Roof rack?
Long-range fuel tank?

Individually, they’re all useful additions. But together, they can add a fair bit of weight to your vehicle — and use some of your available payload.

So here’s the question:

How much do you reckon you’ve added? 🤔

And here’s another one…

Was most of it already fitted before you bought your caravan?

There’s no right or wrong answer — we’re curious to hear how everyone has set up their tow vehicle.

Drop yours in the comments. 👇

It might also get a few of us thinking about just how much our vehicles have changed since the day we drove them home!

🎓 OL’ MATE EXPLAINS… What is payload?

Ol’ Mate’s been doing a bit of learning — and now he’s ready to explain. 😎

Payload is how much weight you can add to your vehicle before reaching its GVM.

Sounds simple enough. But the important bit is understanding what uses that payload.

It includes things like:

👥 Passengers
🧰 Accessories — bullbar, winch, canopy, drawers
🧳 Gear — fridge, batteries, recovery gear, luggage
🔗 The load your caravan puts onto the tow ball

All of these take a piece of the available payload.

And as we’ve seen over the past few weeks, a touring vehicle can have quite a bit fitted to it before the caravan is even hitched up.

So when you’re considering your next caravan, knowing the vehicle’s GVM is only the beginning.

The really useful question is:

How much payload will we actually have left once our vehicle is set up and loaded for the way we travel?

Ol’ Mate’s getting the hang of this. 😉

Look at Ol’ Mate — he’s learning! 😄

A few weeks ago, the question might have been:

“Can the car tow it?”

Now he’s asking:

“Which one suits us?”

And that’s a much better place to start.

The biggest caravan, the most storage or the longest list of features isn’t necessarily the best choice for your setup.

Before you buy, think about:

• What your vehicle can realistically carry and tow
• What the caravan will add to the vehicle through the tow ball
• How many people and how much gear you’ll carry
• Where and how you plan to travel
• What you actually need from your caravan

Two caravans might both look great — but one may be a much better match for your vehicle and the way you travel.

Ol’ Mate’s onto something this week.

Don’t just ask “Can we tow it?” Ask “Does it suit us?”

🚐 BEFORE YOU BUY — Don’t forget what the van puts on the vehicle

When you’re looking at a caravan, it’s easy to focus on how much the van weighs and how much your vehicle can tow.

But there’s another important part of the picture:

The caravan adds load to your tow vehicle too.

When the caravan is hitched, the tow ball download becomes part of the load your vehicle is carrying.

And remember what else your vehicle may already be carrying:

• Passengers
• Bullbar and winch
• Drawers or canopy
• Fridge and batteries
• Recovery gear
• Luggage and everything else you take away

That all needs to be considered within the vehicle’s applicable limits.

So before you buy, don’t just ask:

“Can my vehicle tow this caravan?”

Also ask:

“Does my vehicle have the capacity to carry what this caravan puts onto it — once everything else is loaded too?”

Choosing the right caravan is about finding a combination that works together.

⚖️ KEEPING OUR SCALES ACCURATE

A little behind-the-scenes job for RV Weight Check today.

We’re at Australian Weighing Equipment having our scales calibrated, making sure our equipment is ready to keep giving our customers accurate, reliable measurements.

And while we’re talking about being ready for the road… we’re getting ready ourselves! 🚐

RV Weight Check will be closed for October while we hitch up our own caravan and head away for a few weeks.

After spending plenty of time talking about how other people load, tow and travel, it’s our turn to get out there and enjoy some caravanning ourselves.

We’re already taking bookings for November, so if you’ve been thinking about having your vehicle and caravan weighed before the summer travel season, you’re welcome to get in touch now.

And don’t worry — while we’re away, the RV Weight Check page won’t be going quiet. We might even share a little of what happens when the people who weigh caravans pack their own! 😄

Ol’ Mate’s been busy getting the vehicle ready for touring.

Bullbar.
Winch.
Canopy.
Drawers.
Fridge.
Battery system.
Recovery gear.

All useful things — and all things that add weight to the vehicle.

Then come the passengers, luggage and everything else you take away.

And once the caravan is hitched, the tow ball load adds to the load carried by the vehicle too.

So when Ol’ Mate asks:

“Where did all my payload go?” 🤔

The answer might be sitting right in front of him!

This is why understanding your vehicle before choosing your caravan is so important. A beautifully set-up touring vehicle may already have used a chunk of its available payload before the van is even attached.

It’s not about leaving everything at home. It’s about knowing what you’ve got to work with.

🚙 THINGS WE SEE EVERY WEEK — Where did the payload go?

It’s something we see regularly.

A vehicle starts out with a certain amount of available payload — then, over time, we start adding the things that make it better suited to touring.

Bullbar.
Winch.
Canopy.
Drawers.
Fridge.
Battery system.
Recovery gear.

Then add passengers, luggage and everything else you take away.

And once the caravan is hitched, the tow ball load also adds to the load carried by the vehicle.

Individually, each addition might not seem like much.

But together they can use a significant amount of your available payload — sometimes before you’ve even bought the caravan.

That’s why, when you’re looking at your next caravan, don’t just ask:

“How much can my vehicle tow?”

Also ask:

“How much capacity does my vehicle actually have left for the way we travel?”

Knowing that before you buy can make choosing the right caravan a whole lot easier.
