With the opening of victorianmotorsportspark coming up, along with events like STREET MACHINE Drag Challenge and other events, we’ve been getting increasingly busy with IHRA technical inspections and logbooks.
During these inspections, we’re finding quite a few of the same smaller requirements being overlooked, so here’s a few things worth checking before bringing your car in.
* Roll cage padding: FIA 8857-2001 or SFI 45.1 padding required anywhere the driver’s helmet can contact the cage.
* Tailshaft loops: Required on many modified, engine-swapped and boosted RWD vehicles. Generally mounted within 150mm of the front uni joint, with 360-degree enclosure.
* Transmission cooler lines: Proper transmission-rated hose and fittings required. Rubber fuel hose is not permitted.
* Wheel studs: Must protrude beyond the wheel’s outer face by at least the stud diameter, with thread engagement into the nut at least equal to the stud diameter. Open-ended wheel nuts required quicker than 11.00 seconds.
* Engine containment: Boosted or nitrous cars quicker than 9.00 seconds (5.70 eighth-mile) require an engine diaper, suitable belly pan or equivalent containment.
* Oil catch cans: Supercharged, turbocharged and nitrous combinations quicker than 9.00 seconds (5.70 eighth-mile) require a minimum 4L breather/oil tank. Breather hose volume doesn’t count towards capacity.
* Cooling overflow: Minimum 600mL catch can where the system could discharge liquid onto the track.
* Battery isolation: Where required, the external cut-off must shut down the engine and all electrical systems, including the alternator.
These are just some of the smaller things we’re regularly checking, on top of cage construction, brakes, steering, suspension, fuel systems, driveline and driver safety equipment.
Requirements vary depending on vehicle construction, class, ET and MPH.
If you’re preparing a new build, need an existing logbook updated or want to make sure your car is ready before the upcoming events, get in touch to organise an inspection.
