Overseas licences Conversion:

To get a South Australian drivers licence.

Under 20

If you hold a full foreign licence and you are:
•Under 16, you are not eligible to hold a South Australian learner's permit or driver's licence.
•Under 17, you may be issued a learner's permit after passing the necessary tests.
•Under 20, you may be issued a provisional licence after passing the necessary tests.

You must comply with all of the conditions of the licence or permit and the requirements of the graduated licensing scheme.

Over 20

If you hold a full foreign licence and are 20 or over, you will be required to pass:
•a theory test
•a Hazard Perception Test and
•a practical driving test, with an authorised examiner.

After passing a practical driving test with a private authorised examiner, a further practical driving test with a government assessment officer is sometimes required. This is part of the government audit process and is called a validation assessment. There is no charge for this test.

When you have passed these driving tests you will receive a certificate of competency.

Present your certificate of competency at a Service SA customer service centre and apply for a South Australian driver's licence.

After you have paid the fee and had your photograph taken, a temporary driver's licence will be issued and your photo licence will be posted to you.

If you do not pass the practical driving test, or you fail a validation assessment, you can apply for a learner's permit.

New residents

If you get a permanent visa and become a resident, you must get your South Australian driver's licence within three months. Once you are issued with a South Australian learner's permit or driver's licence, your overseas licence is invalid and you may be required to surrender it.

1 September 2014 - New 25km/h Emergency Services speed Limit

S83 of the Road Traffic Act 1961 - The speed limit was reduced from 40km/h to 25km/h to protect emergency service workers. The 25km/h Emergency Service Speed Zone applies on an area of road:
In the immediate vicinity of an emergency service vehicle that has stopped on the road and is displaying a flashing blue or red light; or
Between two sets of flashing blue or red lights that have been placed by an emergency worker at either end of a length of road on which an emergency vehicle has stopped.
It does not apply if you are driving on a road that is divided by a median strip and the emergency service speed zone is on the other side of the road beyond the median strip.
